Prairie High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Prairie grapplers stunned by West Delaware

The Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling team nearly had a great week.

The Hawks defeated second-ranked Linn-Mar Thursday night in a dual meet, then whipped No. 6 Iowa City West and No. 3 Bettendorf in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the Five Seasons Dual Team Tournament Saturday.

Those big victories over Class 3A opponents set the stage for the championship match, where Prairie blasted to a 36-4 lead over West Delaware in the first eight matches.

The coronation seemed near, but disaster struck.

West Delaware, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, roared back with five straight pins and a decision to stun Prairie 37-36 for the title Saturday afternoon at Kennedy.

Prairie clipped by No. 4 Rams, 52-34

Turning the ball over often and getting substantially outrebounded doesn’t usually translate into a victory.

Especially when it comes against the No. 4 team in the state.

Prairie committed 18 turnovers and was outrebounded 28-12 by Dubuque Senior as the highly ranked Rams beat the Prairie Hawks, 52-34, Friday night at the Prairie gym.

Prairie nips Rams with balanced attack

DUBUQUE - Cyerra Hutchins collected a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds Friday night as Cedar Rapids Prairie trimmed Dubuque Senior, 57-54, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game in Dubuque.

All five starters scored in double figures for Prairie (5-2). Courteney McCrary topped the balanced attack with 13 points. Madison Dellamuth scored 12 points, Alisa Weiland netted 11 and Olivia Usher added 10. Usher grabbed nine rebounds, including seven at the offensive end.

The Hawks made 10 straight free throws down the stretch, with Dellamuth hitting six foul shots and McCrary making four to secure the victory.

Prairie matmen dump No. 2 Linn-Mar, 35-22

The Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling team huddled around Coach Blake Williams for a few minutes Thursday night after whipping second-ranked Linn-Mar and finished the meeting with a quietly confident two-word chant.

"State champs," they said in unison, announcing this year's goal for everyone to hear.

Based on what happened Thursday, they could be headed in that direction.

The fifth-ranked Hawks won nine of 14 matches and dumped the highly regarded Lions, 35-22, with a convincing performance at the Linn-Mar gym.

Prairie girls trimmed by No. 2 City High

In a game of inches, the spunky Prairie Hawks played the Little Hawks of Iowa City High almost right down to the wire Tuesday night at home.

They lost at the end 50-42, but it was mostly because they didn’t have the size to keep the second-ranked team in the state from getting rebounds and buckets under the basket.

Prairie’s hard-nosed 5-foot-9 forward Courteney McCrary did her best to contain budding 6-foot-3 superstar Haley Lorenzen of City High. But she was forced to the bench in key stretches with foul trouble and eventually fouled out trying to keep the ball away from the towering Little Hawk post player.
