Pritts, Jenks top all-MVC cross country teams

Mitch Pritts of Cedar Rapids Prairie was named the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division on the boys cross country all-conference squad. Joe Berry and Etienne Nzoyisaba of Washington made the first team, along with Chase Grabau and Tanner Rathje of Linn-Mar.

Linn-Mar freshman Stephanie Jenks has been named the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division for the Mississippi Valley Conference girls cross country team.

Linn-Mar teammates Amber Decker, Rachel Perry and Maddie Saville joined Jenks on the Valley Division first team. Shannon Gorman of Washington also made the first unit.

Hawks overcome sluggish start to whip Wahawks

Wearing shorts on the sidelines in the cold drizzly rain Friday night, Prairie Coach Mike Morrissey watched his resurgent Hawks pour it on in the second half to douse Waterloo West, 31-7.

"I just don’t like wearing long pants,” explained the dripping wet, energetic and personable young coach afterward. “Year-round, I always wear shorts. It’s stupid, I  know.”

In his second year at Prairie, Morrissey beat long odds to take a team that was 2-7 last year into next week’s playoffs with a 6-3  mark.The Hawks are seeded 10th and will play at seventh-seeded Dubuque Senior (7-2) Wednesday night.

To win at home on John Wall Field on senior night, the Hawks  had to regroup from a sluggish 7-0 halftime lead.

Pritts leads Prairie back to state

Before the Class 4A district cross country meet began Thursday afternoon at the Tuma soccer complex, Kennedy senior Katie Wampole said she and her teammates had one goal.

“To come and get a state qualifying banner for the first time ever.”

Once the race started on a cold, windy and rainy day, Wampole said her focus changed.

“I was just out there  running to get back into my sweats.”

Under far less than ideal conditions, the Cougar girls followed last week’s conference division title with a district championship over a pair of perennial powerhouses from Iowa City. The two new banners are the first in school history for the girls team.

Meeker invited to U.S. Army Bowl combine

Cedar Rapids Prairie sophomore Bryce Meeker has been invited to participate in the U.S. Army National Combine in San Antonio this January.

The combine will feature 500 of the top high school underclassmen from around the country.

Meeker is a 6-foot-5, 270-pound sophomore lineman at Prairie.

Prairie spikes Iowa City West, 3-1

IOWA CITY - Halle Lueck collected 49 assists and 26 digs Tuesday night as Prairie tripped Iowa City West, 25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match in Iowa City.

The Hawks (15-20) used a balanced attack at the net with Megan Sprengeler getting 12 kills, Becca Bell 11, Kate Busswitz 11 and Malia Gudenkauf 11.

Gudenkauf went 15-for-15 on serves and Sara Stevenson was 14-for-14. Bell had four blocks for the Hawks. Busswitz and Lueck had three blocks.
