Washington High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

No. 3 Lions demolish Washington, 56-7

The Linn-Mar Lions have been getting the love in the Associated Press football poll with a No. 3 ranking, but they've been hearing the whispers about the quality of their schedule.

The Lions were undefeated but had played only one team with a winning record heading into Friday night's game against Washington, which was fresh off an upset of then-No. 2 Iowa City High a week earlier.

"We can't control the things we can't control and the schedule is one thing we can't control," Linn-Mar senior Mark Atwater said of the 8-29 mark sported by Linn-Mar's previous foes. "They give us people and we just go play them."

Make that maul them.

Linn-Mar's Andy Henry returned a punt for a touchdown and caught three scoring passes from Atwater and the Lions routed the Warriors, 56-7, in a Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division game at Kingston Stadium.

Wash boys run 2nd at MVC Super Meet

Linn-Mar sophomore Josh Evans added another title to his growing list of accomplishments Thursday in cross country.

Evans won the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet by 12 seconds at Noelridge Park in 15:52, keeping him undefeated against in-state competition this season.

Evans is ranked No.1 in the state and has won all of his races this season except the Heartland Classic, where he placed second behind a runner from Minnesota.

Cedar Falls emerged as the team champion with 86 points. Washington and Linn-Mar both finished with 93 points.

Washington junior Etienne Nzoyisaba placed second in 16:04 and teammate Robert Hogg was fourth in 16:06. The two Warriors bided their time Thursday and stayed back in the pack, then made strong kicks to race toward the top.

Lombardi mulls Washington baseball job

Cedar Rapids Washington football coach Tony Lombardi has expressed interest in possibly becoming the school's next head baseball coach as well.

Brent Henry served as Washington's interim baseball coach this past season after Byron Schlotterback asked for a leave of absence and ultimately resigned.

Lombardi has coached baseball at Washington High School at the sub-varsity level. He played baseball in high school, but ended up playing football at Arizona State University.

"I've enjoyed baseball. I've been around it," Lombardi said Monday.

"If I was the right fit, and people here thought it was a good thing, I would try to assess if it's good for everyone involved. My family, me, the school," he said.

"I want this (the baseball program) to be successful, so I don't want to be the wrong guy, that's for sure."

Lombardi said he has asked Washington administrators what they're looking for in a head coach. He said he realizes serving as the head football coach and head baseball coach could be demanding.

"I don't even know if it's humanly possible to do both," he said. "There's no doubt it would be quite an undertaking."

Lombardi thinks he might be able to steer some football players into the baseball program if he were coaching both sports. Also, he'd be able to coordinate summer workouts for the two sports.

Henry has expressed interest in becoming the head coach on a permanent basis. Henry led the Warriors to a 16-22 record after becoming the interim coach on short notice. He also had to deal with Dakota Freese, his top pitcher, splitting time between Washington and a travel team in Chicago.

Storhm Henry was 1 of Washington's gladiators

Cedar Rapids Washington broke the huddle and turned toward the line of scrimmage during Friday's game at Iowa City High when one of the Warriors suddenly fell in a heap.

It was Storhm Henry, one of Washington's offensive linemen, and for a few scary moments he was lying face down in the grass as medical personnel and coaches rushed to his side.

"It was the most painful thing I've ever experienced," Henry said Monday after practice. "The game before that I had a deep thigh bruise, and this was about 10 times worse than that."

Henry had been struck by severe cramps in the upper parts of both legs, making it impossible to move, probably from dehydration. He finally was helped to his feet and waddled to the sideline.

"It just stunned me," he said. "I had to walk off like an old man. I was really bent down."

This happened during the third quarter. Washington Coach Tony Lombardi did not like what he saw. "I thought he's got to be done for the game," the coach said Monday.

Warriors stun No.2 Little Hawks in final seconds

IOWA CITY - Tony Lombardi played football at Arizona State and coached at two schools in the Big Ten, so he's seen a few remarkable games over the years.

Nothing tops what he saw Friday night in Iowa City, when The Drive stopped The Streak.

Braedon Tovey fired a 5-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Cain with 10 seconds left to cap a brilliant 69-yard drive as the Washington Warriors stunned No. 2 Iowa City High, 27-24, at Bates Field.

The Little Hawks had won 33 straight regular-season games in the Mississippi Valley Conference before running into the Warriors, who spoiled their homecoming.

Washington got the ball at its own 31-yard line with 6:49 left in the game, trailing 24-20, and never gave it back to City High, keeping Little Hawk tailback Ronald Thompson harmlessly on the bench. It was ball control at its best.

The Warriors drove 69 yards in 18 plays, collecting five first downs and methodically moving down the field until they hit paydirt on Tovey's missile to Cain in the end zone.

"Braedon put the ball on the money, the offensive line blocked great," said Cain, who missed the first four games of the season with a broken collarbone. "It was just a great overall sequence."
