Jenny Dickes runs 3rd at Cascade Invy

CASCADE - Xavier High School freshman Jenny Dickes finished third out of 90 runners at the Cascade Invitational cross country meet Friday at the Fillmore Fairways Golf Course.

Dickes ran the 4K race in 16:21. Mariah Kauder of Cascade was the champion in 15:53 and Elizabeth Mallon of Davenport Assumption was second in 16:01.

The Xavier girls placed third out of 15 teams in the standings. Marinna Schroud finished 11th for the Saints.

Junge paces Saints at Cedar Falls golf

CEDAR FALLS - Matt Junge fired a 1-over-par 73 Friday to help the Xavier Saints finish second at the Cedar Falls Tiger Invitational at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course.

West Des Moines Valley claimed the top four spots in the individual standings and ran away with the team championship at 281. The Saints finished 21 strokes behind at 302.

John Ingwersen finished in seventh place for Xavier with a 3-over 75.

Miller has big shoes to fill with Saints

The Xavier Saints list Brendan Miller at 5-foot-7, but that might be a stretch.

"The physical says 5-foot-6," he said Thursday with a smile, "but maybe with some cleats on 5-7."

Regardless of his actual size, Miller has big shoes to fill as he replaces Cal Stovie as Xavier's starting tailback for Friday night's home game against Dubuque Wahlert (1-2).

Saints stay 7th in 4A volleyball poll

The Xavier volleyball team's loss to Kennedy Tuesday night did not hurt the Saints in the Class 4A rankings this week.

The Saints (9-4) held onto their No. 7 ranking in the poll Thursday despite a tight 3-2 setback to the Class 5A Cougars.

The Washington Warriors, ranked 10th in Class 5A last week, dropped out of the poll after losing at Waterloo West Tuesday night.

Kennedy spikers hold off Saints, 3-2

Maybe it was Kennedy's rich tradition in volleyball that made the difference. Or maybe it was Kennedy's tough early-season schedule that gave the Cougars a slight edge over the Xavier Saints Tuesday night.

Or maybe the Saints simply didn't play very well. That's what Xavier Coach arb Sullivan said in her post-game remarks.

Kennedy trimmed Xavier in a five-set marathon, 26-24, 27-25, 17-25, 23-25, 15-11 in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Kennedy.
