Mullinnix sparks Eagles by NIACC

Haley Mullinnix has a great smile and a wonderful laugh, but not when she's on the basketball court.

Mullinnix is a sphinx-like figure on the floor, rarely showing any emotion  no matter how well she's playing.

The smiles and laughter can wait until the game is over, and there was plenty of both Saturday.

Mullinnix poured in a career-high 25 points and canned six 3-pointers to help the 10th-ranked Kirkwood Eagles defeat fifth-ranked NIACC, 77-71, in a conference showdown.

Mullinnix, a sophomore guard from West Branch, was averaging 6.1 points when the day began, but she played the best game of her life when the Eagles needed her most.

"It feels pretty good," she allowed, laughing and flashing that great smile. "Yeah, it definitely feels special. Especially because we did play so well as a team."

Kirkwood leads the ICCAC conference standings with a perfect 6-0 record. Iowa Lakes and Southeastern are tied for second at 4-1, with NIACC in fourth place at 3-1 after its first setback in the league.

Mullinnix deliberately keeps her emotions under wraps during a game, trying to keep an even keel.

"I try to keep it down," she said. "Obviously when I'm playing well, it comes out a little more, but I try to keep it all intact and just play the game and keep my head on straight."

No. 10 KCC women roll by SCC

KEOKUK - The 10th-ranked Kirkwood women's basketball team roared to a 41-12 lead at halftime Wednesday night and dunked Southeastern, 70-48, in an ICCAC conference game in Keokuk.

The Eagles outscored the Blackhawks, 23-3, in the second quarter to take complete control of the game.

Ashley Tull scored 13 points for Kirkwood (15-5, 5-0). Mackenzie Jenkins finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Anasha Hurst contributed 11 points in the victory. Johanna Myers hit three 3-pointers and scored nine points. Paige Bradford had eight points and seven rebounds.

No. 10 Eagles roll by Southwestern

CRESTON - Mackenzie Jenkins scored 21 points Saturday as the  10th-ranked Kirkwood women's basketball team rolled by Southwestern,  97-54, in an ICCAC conference game in Creston.

Jenkins shot 8 for 11 from the field and tossed in three 3-pointers  for the Eagles (14-5, 4-0). Leah Robinson shot 7 for 8 from the field  and finished with 15 points.

Paige Bradford scored 12 points for Kirkwood. Haley Mullinnix hit  three triples and contributed 11 points to the blowout victory.

The Eagles made 38 of 64 shots for 59.4 percent and connected on 13  3-pointers.

No. 10 KCC women knock off DMACC

When the Kirkwood women's basketball team is good, the Eagles are very, very good with unselfish passes, good shooting and a willingness to listen to Coach Kim Muhl.

When the Eagles struggle ... well, here's what Muhl had to say about that Wednesday night.

"They've got to learn to be coached and quit being babies and grow up," he remarked. "You can put that in the paper."

The 10th-ranked Eagles were very, very good in the third quarter and rode a 30-point outburst in that stanza to a 66-37 victory over DMACC in an ICCAC conference game at Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood scored only 22 points in the first and led 22-17 at intermission. Muhl ripped into his players at halftime and they came out with a vengeance.

What did Muhl tell them?

"Quit fighting me on what needs to be done on a daily basis," he revealed. "It's not 'cool' just to be on the floor. You've got to become nasty and dirty and play harder. And execute.
