Kirkwood Community College - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Rima eager for Year 2 with Kirkwood

Todd Rima steered the Kirkwood Community College baseball team to a winning record last season after inheriting a ballclub that finished below .500 the previous year.

Now he's ready for the next step in rebuilding the program.

The Eagles finished 30-14 overall and 13-11 in ICCAC conference games in 2013 after going 21-33 and 9-15 the year before under Tim Evans. Rima likes what he's seen so far.

KCC men win playoff thriller in OT

Johnson Hall was a place for grown men with steel in their veins Tuesday night.

Men like Joseph Tagarelli, who left the Kirkwood gym with a welt under his left eye. And Jalen Currie, who played the game of his life. And Taylor Olson, whose sore ankle won't get the rest it needs for at least another few days.

The Kirkwood Eagles topped NIACC, 75-71, in an overtime thriller in the opening round of the Region XI junior college basketball tournament.

Kirkwood (21-9) will visit Iowa Lakes (22-8) in the semifinals Thursday night in Estherville. The regional finals are Saturday.

No.11 Eagles roll, but Sneed hurt

The Kirkwood women's basketball team strolled in the opening round of the regional junior college tournament Tuesday night with a 63-32 victory over Iowa Lakes, but their journey will get a lot harder from here.

The 11th-ranked Eagles (25-6) face No.9 Iowa Central (25-5) in the semifinals Friday night at Iowa Central, then probably would have to play top-ranked NIACC (29-2) in the finals Saturday afternoon for a trip to the national tournament.

On top of that, the Eagles might have to knock off those two ranked teams in Fort Dodge without 6-foot sophomore Ariel Sneed, who suffered a possible concussion Tuesday night when she fell on her face during the first half at Johnson Hall.
