Wagemester nets 400th win at Kirkwood

Doug Wagemester always figured he'd be a high school teacher and coach. That was the career path he envisioned for himself when he was growing up in Clinton.

"I loved my high school coaches and admired those guys," he said Saturday afternoon.

Instead of coaching high school basketball, Wagemester's life took a twist after he graduated from Loras College in 1990. He began his career as an assistant coach at the collegiate level and has stayed with it ever since.

Wagemester, 44, has been eminently successful as the head coach at Kirkwood Community College and collected his 400th victory in 15 years Saturday when the Eagles clipped Clinton Community College, 75-52, at Johnson Hall.

Olson nets 20 as Kirkwood belts SCC

Taylor Olson had a lot to deal with during his first semester at Kirkwood this fall.

First he hurt his ankle before practice began, hindering his preparation for the season. A former girlfriend was tragically killed in a car accident Oct. 15, dealing him a deep personal setback. And he was thrust right into the starting lineup at point guard as a freshman, given the responsibility of running the team.

"The first semester is always a big-time adjustment anyway," Kirkwood Coach Doug Wagemester noted Wednesday night. "That was heavy."

Olson did okay during the first semester, but the Cedar Rapids Jefferson grad was more of a complementary player than a star in November and December. That could be changing.

Olson drilled six 3-pointers Wednesday and poured in 20 points as the Eagles thumped Southeastern Community College, 75-62, at Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood women jump to No.4 in rankings

The Kirkwood women's basketball team climbed three spots to No.4 in the NJCAA Division II national rankings on Wednesday.

Kirkwood (14-3) will take a six-game winning streak into Wednesday night's game at Marshalltown.

The Eagles defeated top-ranked Lake Michigan at the Illinois Central holiday tournament in late December. Lake Michigan fell from No.1 to No.9 in this week's poll while Kirkwood jumped from No.7 to No.4.
