Kirkwood takes 9th at volleyball tourney

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Kirkwood Community College volleyball team defeated Phoenix, 3-0, Saturday to finish in ninth place at the NJCAA Division II national tournament.

The Eagles won the match 25-20, 26-24, 25-20.

Kirkwood (40-9) began the 16-team tournament on Thursday with a 3-1 loss to Owens Community College, but the Eagles rebounded with three straight victories in the consolation bracket to claim ninth place.

Douglas sparks Kirkwood by Dakota County

Devan Douglas had a big game for the Kirkwood Eagles Saturday as they whipped Dakota County Technical College, 76-52, at Johnson Hall.

Douglas, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Clinton, collected 22 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. He hit two 3-pointers.

Gage Heffernan scored 16 points for Kirkwood (4-3), Kevin Hunter added 12 points and J.C. Fuller had 10.

Kirkwood women lose on late layup

SEDALIA, Mo. - Macy Wright made a layup with two seconds left Saturday as Three Rivers nipped Kirkwood, 57-56, in the second round of the State Fair Classic women's basketball tournament.

Kirkwood trailed, 55-49, with 1:50 left but scored seven straight points to grab a 56-55 advantage.

Kianna Jacobs began the rally with a basket, then Whitney Rohrbach hit a 3-pointer to pull the Eagles within 55-54.

Three Rivers committed a turnover. Friday Chuol of Kirkwood was fouled and missed both free throws, but Rohrbach grabbed an offensive rebound and fed Jacobs for a basket and a 56-55 edge with 25 seconds remaining.

Three Rivers held the ball for the last shot and Wright got loose for the layup and the victory.

Hard-working Heffernan leads Eagles

Gage Heffernan admits that he isn’t the guy who is going to jump out of the gym, or drain a barrage of 3-pointers.

But what he might lack in those offensive qualities, he makes up for in hustle.

Heffernan willed his way to 17 points and 14 rebounds on Friday night, helping his Kirkwood Eagles blow past Elgin, 88-51, at Johnson Hall.

Poor-shooting half dooms women

SEDALIA, Mo. -- The Kirkwood women's basketball team suffered its first defeat Friday night in a 67-50 loss to State Fair Community College.

Kirkwood (4-1) led by as many as 15 points in the first half before settling on a 10-point lead 35-25 at the half.

But poor shooting doomed the Eagles in the second half. Kirkwood made just 5 of 19 shots (26.3 percent) and was outscored 42-15 in the period.
