No. 1 KCC women raise mark to 18-1

Ju Gaston collected a double-double Monday night as the top-ranked  Kirkwood women's basketball team defeated Southwestern, 71-45, in an  ICCAC conference game at Johnson Hall.

Gaston finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two  steals for the Eagles, who raised their records to 18-1 overall and  5-0 in the league.

Amara Lipsey made all three of her 3-pointers and scored 13 points for  Kirkwood. Kemara Watson contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

Simone Jordan scored 16 points for Southwestern (6-12, 1-4).

Kirkwood led by only two points at halftime, 25-23, but the Eagles  outscored the Spartans 29-8 in the third quarter to take control.

No. 12 Eagles roll by Southwestern

The Southwestern men's basketball team arrived at Johnson Hall Monday  with only eight players in uniform and nobody taller than 6-foot-5.

It was a mismatch from the opening tip.

The 12th-ranked Kirkwood Eagles opened a 53-point lead in the second  half and cruised to a 100-60 victory in an ICCAC conference game.

Kirkwood raised its records to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in the league.  Southwestern fell to 7-14 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

DJ Purnell scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Eagles.  Luke Appel collected a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.  Jamal Stephenson, enjoying his first start this season, also scored 15  points. Griff Clark canned four 3-pointers and added 14 points.

Kirkwood punished Southwestern on the backboards, 48-15. James Kelley  scored 19 points for the visitors.

No. 1 Eagles cruise to 17-1 record

BOONE - Freshman Kemara Watson scored a career-best 19 points and  grabbed eight rebounds Wednesday night as the top-ranked Kirkwood  women's basketball team blasted DMACC, 89-58, in an ICCAC conference  game in Boone.

The Eagles raised their records to 17-1 overall and 4-0 in the  conference. DMACC fell to 8-9 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Natalie Tomaszewski pitched in with 10 points and eight rebounds. Ten  Kirkwood players scored at least five points in the well-balanced  attack.

Hannah McKinney scored 11 points for DMACC.

No. 3 DMACC dumps No. 12 Eagles

BOONE - The 12th-ranked Kirkwood men's basketball trailed by 20 points  at halftime Wednesday night and fell to third-ranked DMACC, 78-58, in  an ICCAC conference game in Boone.

The Eagles dropped to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in the league. DMACC raised  its records to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

DJ Purnell finished with 12 points and eight rebounds for Kirkwood.  Jamal Stephenson hit four 3-pointers and scored 12 points. Luke Appel  had nine points and nine rebounds.

Zach Lester led DMACC with 16 points. Willie Guy, a freshman from  Cedar Rapids Jefferson, had a double-double with 10 points and 11  rebounds.

No. 1 Eagles crush Iowa Central

FORT DODGE - The top-ranked Kirkwood women's basketball team cruised to an 85-39 victory over Iowa Central Wednesday night in an ICCAC conference game in Fort Dodge.

Paige Bradford led the Eagles with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds. Kemara Watson shot 6-for-6 from the field and finished with 15 points. Delani Harris added 13 points. Natalie Tomaszewski blocked three shots.

Auriyah Stewart scored 10 points for Iowa Central, which fell to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Kirkwood raised its records to 16-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
