Appel nets 43 as Eagles trim Coe

Luke Appel poured in a career-high 43 points Tuesday night as the  12th-ranked Kirkwood Eagles rallied to defeat the Coe junior varsity, 95-89, at Johnson Hall.

Appel, a 6-foot-7 sophomore from Marshalltown, shot 18 for 22 from the field and canned a pair of 3-pointers.

Coe led by nine points with about three minutes remaining, but the Eagles forced turnovers and surged to their 18th victory in 22 games.

DJ Purnell finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds for Kirkwood. Seybian Sims collected 10 rebounds, eight points, three assists and three steals.

Sean Oberman scored 19 points for Coe. The Kohawks made sixteen 3-pointers, with Zach Bushbaum nailing five triples.

Coe women boot Mount Mercy

The Coe women's soccer team clipped Mount Mercy, 4-2, in a battle of northeast Cedar Rapids neighbors at the Plaster Athletic Complex Wednesday night.

Sydney Schroder, Morgan Petsche, Amanda Hiebert and Katelyn Evans scored goals for the Kohawks. Schroder also had two assists.

Carly Walker and Melany Roggow tallied for the Mustangs. Holli Jones was credited with both assists.

Mustangs, Coe battle to 0-0 draw

The Mount Mercy and Coe women's soccer teams battled to a scoreless tie in double-overtime Wednesday at Clark Field.

The match lasted 120 minutes without either team finding the net.

Sarah Johnson made two saves for Mount Mercy and Kacey Baker turned away five shots for Coe.

The outcome left Mount Mercy with a 1-0-2 record. Coe is 1-1-1 for the campaign.

   

Harrington makes D3 semis for Coe

Ryan Harrington of Coe won both of his matches at the NCAA Division III wrestling tournament Friday and will compete in the semifinals Saturday morning at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Harrington defeated Jake Johnson of Concordia-Moorhead, 8-0, and trimmed Ethan Farmer of Wabash, 7-3, at 174 pounds.

Coe softball team wins twice

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Coe College softball team won two games Friday in Florida.

The Kohawks defeated Defiance, 15-7, and knocked off Messiah, 6-2.

Sara Czachowski went 4-for-4 with two RBIs in the first game for the Kohawks (12-2). Paige Wieland and Brenna Winn were 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Winn belted a home run.

Mallory McArtor, Allie O'Brien, Maddy Ryan and Gretchen Lilienthal had two hits against Defiance. O'Brien drove in three runs and Ryan had two RBIs.

McArtor, O'Brien and Ryan had two hits against Messiah. Winn and Madi Miller drove in two runs.

Coe and Messiah were tied, 1-1, after seven innings. The Kohawks broke loose for five runs in the top of the eighth and Messiah scored once in the bottom of the eighth.
