Coe's rally falls short at Wartburg

WAVERLY - A furious rally by the Coe men's basketball team fell short Saturday and the Kohawks lost to Wartburg, 71-65, in an Iowa Conference game at Levick Arena in Waverly.

The Kohawks chopped an 18-point deficit to just three points at 68-65 on a layup by Andrew Wirth with 1:26 remaining, but the rally ended there and Coe did not score again.

Wirth scored 20 points for the Kohawks (9-6, 1-3).

Taylor Jacobsmeier, Jordan Cannon and Clay Cook scored 14 points apiece for Wartburg (8-7, 2-2).

Coe women hold off Wartburg, 74-70

WAVERLY - Megan Hayes scored 21 points and Hannah Breitbach added 17 to lead Coe to a 74-70 win over Wartburg in an Iowa Conference women's basketball game Saturday at Levick Arena.

Coe (7-8, 2-2) scored the first six points of the game and built a 16-point lead in the first half.

Wartburg (7-8, 1-3) whittled the Kohawks' lead to 37-31 by halftime. The Knights hed their only lead of the game, 54-52, on Kailey Kladivo's layup with 10:27 left in the game.

Coe regained the lead, 55-54, on Hayes' three-point play with 9:57 to play. The Kohawks never trailed for the remainder of the game, but they couldn't shake the Knights.

Ball helps Coe matmen stick Augustana

As the lights changed at Eby Fieldhouse for the final home wrestling meet of the season, Coe College senior Ethan Ball walked onto the mats as one of six senior wrestlers being recognized. But his upcoming graduation and senior status aren’t the only accomplishments for which Ball’s been praised.

Last weekend Ball won his 100th match, becoming only the 10th Coe wrestler to achieve that milestone.

“It wasn’t something that I really thought about at all,” he said. “I didn’t know until somebody said I was at 99.”

Hot Duhawks belt Coe, 94-65

DUBUQUE - Loras College was too hot and too balanced for Coe Wednesday night in an Iowa Conference men's basketball game in Dubuque.

The Duhawks shot a sizzling 67.3 percent from the field and saw five players score in double figures in a 94-65 victory over the Kohawks.

Loras made 37 of 55 shots overall and was 9 for 19 on 3-pointers. Coe shot 40.4 percent from the field and made only two 3-pointers.

Coe women fall at Loras, 56-51

DUBUQUE - Mickey Hansche hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough to save Coe College in an Iowa Conference women's basketball game in Dubuque.

Loras clipped the Kohawks, 56-51, before 250 fans.

Hansche gave Coe a 41-37 lead with 12:40 left in the game, but Loras scored 10 straight points for a 47-41 margin with 7:12 remaining.

The Kohawks tied the game, 51-51, on a 3-pointer by Lindsey Jipp with 1:31 left, but the visitors did not score again. Loras made five free throws in the final 33 seconds for the victory.

Megan Hayes collected eight points and six rebounds for Coe (6-8, 1-2). Katie Langmeier scored 13 points for Loras (8-6, 3-0).
