Mustangs fall in MCC softball tourney

OSKALOOSA - The Mount Mercy Mustangs were trimmed by William Penn, 9-8, in the first round of the Midwest Collegiate Conference softball tournament in Oskaloosa Thursday.

Mount Mercy ended the season with a 19-27 record. William Penn advanced to the final four of the tournament this weekend in Des Moines.

The Mustangs scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to grab an 8-4 lead, but William Penn responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 9-8 edge and held on.

LJ Putzier hit a home run for Mount Mercy. Hannah Petersen and Claudia Magana had two hits. Alexis Ferguson and Petersen scored two runs.

Kohawks rally to top Mustangs, 6-3

Coe rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday and topped Mount Mercy, 6-3, in a battle of northeast Cedar Rapids college baseball teams at Daniels Park.

Jack Hoffmann, Jory Heckenberg, Grant Henning and Michael Redmond drove in runs in the eighth inning for the Kohawks with base hits. Heckenberg and Redmond had doubles in the frame.

Coe shortstop Craig Konrardy collected his 20th double in the ballgame, setting a school record. He was 2-for-4.

Heckenberg went 3-for-4. Hoffmann was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Hoffmann also tossed five shutout innings as the starting pitcher, but got a no-decision. AJ Reuter was the winning pitcher in relief.

Schlueter paces Mustangs at MCC golf

RIVERSIDE - Matt Schlueter of Mount Mercy tied for second place at the Midwest Collegiate Conference men's golf tournament Wednesday with a 54-hole score of 4-under-par 212 at the Blue Top Ridge course in Riverside.

Schlueter fired rounds of 70, 72 and 70. He finished one shot behind Jay Monahan of Grand View, who claimed medalist honors at 5-under 211

Jamie Booth of Mount Mercy placed sixth at 1-under 215 and Jack South finished ninth at 1-over 217.

Grand View won the men's title. Mount Mercy finished third, 12 shots off the pace.

Mustangs deny Clarke share of title

PEOSTA - The Mount Mercy Mustangs trimmed Clarke, 5-4, in 12 innings Tuesday to deny the Crusaders a share of the Midwest Collegiate Conference baseball title at AJ Spiegel Park in Peosta.

Grand View and AIB tied for first place in the regular-season standings with 16-8 records. Clarke fell a game short at 15-9, thanks to Tuesday's loss to the Mustangs.

Mount Mercy scored twice in the top of the 12th inning on RBI singles by Patrick Haney and Cody Williams for a 5-3 lead. Clarke scored in the bottom of the 12th to make it 5-4, but Evan Boddicker got the final out for the Mustangs with two runners on base.

Haney went 3-for-6 and drove in two runs. Williams was 3-for-5. Jason Darichuk scored twice for Mount Mercy.

South, Schlueter pace Mustang golfers

RIVERSIDE - Jack South and Matt Schlueter of Mount Mercy are tied for third place at the Midwest Collegiate Conference golf tournament after finishing 36 holes Tuesday with 2-under-par scores of 142 at Blue Top Ridge in Riverside.

The tournament will end Wednesday.

Matt Weeks of Grand View fired rounds of 68 and 69 Tuesday for a 36-hole score of 7-under 137. He has a four-stroke lead over Tyler Christians of Grand View.

Grand View leads the team standings at 10-under 566. Mount Mercy is in third place at 3-over 579.
