Mount Mercy volleyball team falls

DES MOINES - Mount Mercy was trimmed by Grand View, 25-21, 25-23, 17-25, 25-20, in the semifinals of the Midwest Collegiate Conference volleyball tournament at the Johnson Wellness Center in Des Moines Wednesday night.

Grand View (26-12) will visit Viterbo Saturday night for the title.

Cori Peterzalek led Mount Mercy (16-22) with 17 kills. Leslie Hoffmann and Megan Paustian finished with 13 kills apiece.

Abbie Perez collected 43 assists and 13 digs. Hannah Whitley had 13 digs and Emily Hendrickson 11 digs.

 

Zeitler, Oldham spark Mount Mercy

CLINTON - Makenzie Zeitler scored 18 points and Christa Oldham added 16 Wednesday night as Mount Mercy defeated Ashford, 68-55, in an NAIA basketball game at Kehl Arena in Clinton.

The Mustangs trailed 28-25 at halftime, but they outscored the hosts 43-27 in the second stanza.

Zeitler made three 3-pointers for Mount Mercy (3-1). She also had five rebounds and three assists. Oldham hit two triples. She also had nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in a strong all-around game.

Abby Herb collected 13 points and six rebounds for the Mustangs.

Samantha Rodriguez scored 12 points for Ashford (2-2).

MOUNT MERCY (68): Herb 2 9-14 13, Oldham 5 4-4 16, Timms 1 0-2 2, Last 2 0-0 6, Zeitler 5 5-7 18, Herdliska 1 1-2 3, Weiland 1 0-0 3, Jantti 3 1-2 7. Totals 20 20-31 68.

4 Mustangs win MCC honors

Four Mount Mercy athletes have been honored by the Midwest Collegiate Conference.

Tyler Keith and Liz Mosbach have been named the Harrier of the Year after capturing titles at the MCC cross country meet Saturday. Keith, a senior from Muscatine, won his 8K race in 26:48. Mosbach, a junior from Ladd, Ill., won her 5K race in 19:01.

Leslie Hoffmann, a sophomore from Manchester, was named the Volleyball Player of the Week after collecting 25 kills in two victories. Abby Perez, a sophomore from New Hartford, was named the Setter of the Week after having 74 assists and 22 digs in the two wins.

 

   

St. Ambrose ends Mustangs season in shootout

DAVENPORT - Mount Mercy scored a late goal in regulation to tie the match, but couldn't break through in overtime and eventually lost in a shootout, falling 2-1 to St. Ambrose in the semifinals of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament on Sunday.

St. Ambrose got the lead in the second half but the Mustangs tied the score on a goal from Yinku Ajibola with 10 minutes remaining.

The Bees, who will meet Grand View for the tournament title on Thursday, won the shootout, 4-2.

Mount Mercy closes at 11-6-2.

 

No.2 Midland knocks off Mustangs

Galen Gullie tossed in six 3-pointers and scored 30 points Saturday as second-ranked Midland (Neb.) defeated Mount Mercy, 76-61, in an NAIA men's basketball game at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

Dondre Osborne led the Mustangs (3-2) with 15 points. Ian Matos and James Boonstoppel scored 13 points apiece. Alex Houston had 10 points and Ben Struss grabbed nine rebounds.

Alex Starkel scored 16 points for Midland (3-1).

MIDLAND (76): Franklin 1 2-2 4, Jones 2 2-4 7, Gullie 9 6-6 30, Starkel 8 0-1 16, Bryant 0 0-0 0, Vaughn 1 0-0 3, Ridgeway 1 0-0 2, Hueser 2 0-0 5, Flynn 4 0-0 9. Totals 28 10-13 76.
