Petersen reaches 20 wins with Kirkwood

Bryan Petersen never expected to be the head basketball coach at Kirkwood Community College when he was only 26 years old, but he welcomed the challenge of leading the Eagles this season.

By all accounts he's done just fine.

Kirkwood topped Ellsworth, 81-69, Saturday afternoon at Johnson Hall to finish the regular season at 20-9 overall and 10-4 in the ICCAC Conference.

Petersen might be his own worst critic, despite the success.

"I'm not satisfied with it. I wish we were a little better than that," he said. "I wish we would have won the league."

They came close.

The Eagles finished one game behind DMACC in the ICCAC standings and will host NIACC (20-10) in the quarterfinals of the regional tournament Tuesday night at 7:30.

Sneed spurs Eagles into tourney at 24-6

Ariel Sneed is a 6-foot power forward who can do a lot of things for the Kirkwood women's basketball team, but she really likes to hit those 3-pointers.

That's when she smiles the most on the court.

Sneed was all smiles Saturday as she popped in three 3-pointers and scored 22 points as the 11th-ranked Eagles defeated Ellsworth, 76-54, in the final game of the regular season at Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood (24-6, 12-4) will host Iowa Lakes (7-23, 4-12) in the quarterfinals of the ICCAC tournament Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles are seeded No.3 in the eight-team tournament and Iowa Lakes is seeded No.6.
