Torson wins Metro Spotlight award

Kayla Torson of Xavier has been selected as this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight award for high school girls, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Torson, a 5-foot-11 junior, is a member of the Xavier volleyball team that is ranked No.9 in Class 4A this season. The Saints upset Class 5A No.2 Johnston in the Washington tournament Saturday and reached the championship match.

Torson, an outside hitter with an uncanny ability to hang in the air for kill shots, was named second team All-State by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association in 2012 as a sophomore.

Heitland wins Metro Spotlight award

Drew Heitland from Kennedy has been selected as the winner of the Metro Spotlight award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Heitland has been a mainstay on the Kennedy varsity football team for three years. He is a tight end/defensive end on the club this season and caught seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown in Kennedy's 28-24 victory over Prairie Friday night.

Heitland lost 50 pounds during the offseason to get in better shape and now stands 6-foot-3 and approximately 225 pounds.

RoughRiders down Youngstown

WEST ORANGE, N.J. - The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders scored four goals in the third period to beat Youngstown, 5-3, Sunday in the USHL Atlantic Challenge exhibition series at Codey Arena.

The RoughRiders went 1-1-1 in their three games.

The score was tied, 1-1, heading into the third period.

Youngstown took a 2-1 lead on a goal 4:04 into the third period, but the RoughRiders scored the next three goals to take a 4-2 lead.

No Evans, no Jenks, no problem

They didn’t have the stars of 2012, but the Linn-Mar girls and boys cross country teams showed Saturday there is still plenty of talent running for the black and red.

Opening their season hosting the Linn-Mar Invitational, the Lions were in top form, sweeping both the boys and girls team titles over the course at Oak Ridge Middle School.

The girls, led by individual champion Amber Decker, held off Cedar Rapids Kennedy to win by 10 points. Linn-Mar’s boys were much more dominant, taking six of the top 10 places, including individual champion Tanner Rathje, to outdistance runnerup Cedar Rapids Washington by a wide margin.

Both teams enter the season with lofty expectations. The boys are top-ranked in Class 4A by the Iowa Track Coaches Association while the girls opened the season ranked second.
