Rima signs 8 for Kirkwood baseball

Todd Rima plans to build the Kirkwood baseball program with players from his own back yard, but he'll also search far and wide for top-notch talent.

That philosophy is reflected in his first full recruiting class with the Eagles.

Rima has signed eight players to letters-of-intent for the 2014 season and the new class is split evenly between in-state recruits and players from Colorado, New York, Puerto Rico and Australia.

Anderson nets 2A title with rare feat

Linn-Mar junior Brady Anderson flashed a shy, almost embarrassed smile after he cruised to the Class 2A state tennis title Saturday afternoon at Coe College.

He should have done back-flips, but that's not his style.

Anderson overwhelmed Pleasant Valley freshman Charlie Humes, 6-0, 6-0, in the championship match to become the first player in 58 years to capture the title without losing a single game in the finals.

He also became the first state singles champion from Linn-Mar since Hunter Skogman claimed top honors in 1998.

For much of the season, Kennedy sophomore Ryan Walker has been a playmaker.

In Saturday's Class 3A Substate 4 final against Linn-Mar, Walker took on a new role - goal scorer.

The speedy 5-foot-3 forward broke away from the Lion defense, took a long stretch pass from teammate Reid Botkin and hammered it past Lion keeper Jared Belin with 17:30 remaining for his first tally of the season.

That goal, combined with another three minutes later from Sameeullah Jung and another stellar performance from goalkeeper Nathan Althoff, gave the Cougars a 2-0 victory and their third trip to state in the past four seasons.
