Sweeney excited about playing in C.R.

Kellen Sweeney has good memories of playing baseball at Veterans Memorial Stadium in high school games and Perfect Game events while living in Cedar Rapids.

He's hoping a return to his roots might help him snap an 0-for-12 slump that's seen his batting average plummet to .178 with the Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League.

Sweeney and the Lugnuts are scheduled to play a three-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels this Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at Perfect Game Field. He played for Lansing part of last year, but the Lugnuts did not make any trips to Cedar Rapids during the 2012 campaign.

Gingrich shoots Lions past No.4 Prairie

In a game they controlled the whole way, it took the Linn-Mar boys almost 60 minutes to finally put away Prairie, 2-1, Tuesday night on the frozen tundra of their home field.

The game winner came with 20:41 to go when junior midfielder Jason Gingrich smacked a line drive from the 10-yard line high into the far left side of the net.

“Jason (Webb) dropped the ball off. I took one touch and the ball dipped into the corner,” Gingrich explained after scoring his fourth goal of the season.

Lions proving selves in tough conditions

They have played just four games, been hindered by an inconsistent practice schedule and have a roster littered with sophomores and freshmen.

Yes, the Linn-Mar girls soccer team is still working to find its way. Tuesday night's 2-0 win over Cedar Rapids Prairie on a raw, windy night at John Wall Field showed the good and bad for the 4-0 Lions.

The good has been a defense that has not been scored on in 346 minutes of play. The not so good has been the inconsistency that comes with youth combined with tough playing conditions.

No.3 Eagles riding 29-game streak

IOWA FALLS - The third-ranked Kirkwood softball team extended its winning streak to 29 games Tuesday by sweeping an ICCAC doubleheader at Ellsworth, 9-0 and 12-1.

Both games lasted only five innings.

Kayla Tatge belted her 21st home run and Amber Logemann (15-3) pitched a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in the first game. Kristen Winter hit her ninth home run and drove in four runs. Shelby Crist had two hits and Krysta Tutsch drove in two runs.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Iowa (Cubs)) - Started in right field Tuesday and was 1-for-4 in the I-Cubs' 4-1 loss at Memphis. Season stats: G - 14, Avg. - .362, AB - 47, H - 17, HR - 3, RBI - 8, SB - 1.
