Surging Warriors knock off J-Hawks

Cedar Rapids Jefferson junior Jacob Olson torched Washington for a career-high 31 points in a 57-36 victory when the two clubs met back in December.

The Warriors remembered that painful encounter and did something about it Friday night.

Washington pestered Olson all night in the rematch at Jefferson and defeated the J-Hawks, 50-40, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game for its fourth straight victory.

Fast-starting Sabers down Marion boys

DeWitt Central put together a 22-point first quarter and the Sabers coasted to a 59-42 win over Marion in a battle of Wamac Conference foes at Marion Friday night.

The game did not count in the division standings. DeWitt Central (10-11) is in the East Division and Marion (10-9) is in the West.

Marion played solid defense for the final three quarters, but the Indians could not recover from the 5-of-7  three-point shooting the Sabers put up in the first quarter.

Cedar Valley girls win historic game

LONE TREE - Players hugged. Coaches hugged. Parents hugged.

Then they switched partners and hugged some more.

The Cedar Valley Christian girls basketball team collected an historic victory Thursday night when it clipped Lone Tree, 55-51, in overtime in the first round of the Class 1A regional tournament at Lone Tree.

It was the first playoff victory in school history for Cedar Valley, which joined the IGHSAU for varsity competition last season.

Shelby Hembera poured in 34 points to spark the Huskies, but it was a total team effort from all six girls on the squad.

"I'm just so excited," said Coach Craig Foote. "I'm so excited for our girls, I'm so excited for the parents, I'm so excited for the families, for the school, for the teachers, for the administration.

Meier leads Kennedy girls past Linn-Mar

Both schools in this rivalry were wrapping up their regular season Mississippi Valley Conference action in the game at the Cougar gym and it was Cedar Rapids Kennedy finishing the conference action on a high note with a 58-51 victory over Linn-Mar on Senior Night.  The leading scorer of the contest for Kennedy was Madison Meier with 15 points and Paige Hendrickson chipped in with 14 leading the Cougars.

Prairie wrestlers want shot at dual title

The wrestlers at Cedar Rapids Prairie want to put their best lineup on the mat for the state dual meet tournament next Wednesday in Des Moines and take a shot at the title.

Here's the big question: Will Coach Blake Williams agree?

It's not a simple answer.

The second-ranked Hawks topped 12th-ranked West Des Moines Valley, 40-29, in the regional tournament Wednesday night at Prairie to advance to the state meet.
