Feisty Kirkwood men knock off DMACC

Kirkwood guard Kasey Semler left Johnson Hall with a sore hand, sore toe, sore groin and a smile Thursday night.

"I'll go get some ice in a minute," he said dismissively, gladly trading a few aches and pains for a key victory.

Semler contributed 10 points, six assists and the right attitude as the Eagles defeated DMACC, 74-60, in an ICCAC conference game.

"I thought Kasey Semler brought us a little edge to the table," said Kirkwood Coach Doug Wagemester. "A couple of times I thought he was trying to force it maybe a little bit, but he was setting the tone. And that was good to see."

Hobbs helps Kirkwood women top DMACC

The dysfunctional Kirkwood women's basketball team won another game Thursday night.

Coach Kim Muhl uses that word all the time to describe his team. He gets no argument from his players.

"Dysfunctional is us," freshman guard Lexi Hobbs said humorously with a smile. "We are VERY dysfunctional. It works, though."

The third-ranked Eagles topped No.15 DMACC, 60-53, at Johnson Hall for their 13th straight victory despite committing 20 turnovers, shooting 55 percent at the foul line and getting beaten on the backboards.

Prairie claims share of MVC mat crown

DUBUQUE - Prairie dusted off Kennedy and Dubuque Hempstead to finish in a tie with Linn-Mar for the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division wrestling title Thursday night at Hempstead.

The Hawks (24-3, 12-1) clobbered Kennedy 53-22 and pummelled Hempstead 62-13.

Prairie may have suffered a blow to its state dual meet title hopes, however. Josh Wenger, the Hawks' 126-pounder, had to default because of injury in his match against Kennedy's Nathan Waterhouse.

Linn-Mar had six pins against Xavier. Damon Griffin (126), Joel Northrup (145), Dakota Digmann (160), Andrew Holladay (182), Sam Nowak (195) and Justin Green (220) had falls against the Saints.

State wrestling controversy boils over again

The Iowa High School Athletic Association wants all of the wrestling teams that make the state dual meet tournament Feb. 13 to use their best people, threatening possible sanctions if the coaches do not comply.

The coaches, meanwhile, strongly dislike holding the state dual meet tournament the day before the traditional state tournament begins and probably will juggle their lineups again this year to protect their wrestlers.

It could be a draw.
