Ranked Metro girls teams get byes
Up to three Metro girls basketball teams have the opportunity to make it to the Class 4A state tournament next month in Des Moines.
Two Metro teams were sent to Region 3, three to Region 4 and one to Region 5. Marion was assigned to Region 3 in the Class 3A tournament.
All three ranked Metro teams -- No. 2 Linn-Mar, No. 5 Washington and No. 11 Xavier -- received first round byes.
However, Linn-Mar and Xavier were assigned to the same region. Jefferson also is in that region, along with Dubuque Senior, Marshalltown and Newton. Linn-Mar will play the winner of the Jefferson-Dubuque senior game and Xavier the winner of the Marshalltown-Newton game in the regional semifinals on Feb. 19. The regional final is Feb. 22 at Jefferson.
Washington is in Region 5 with Davenport North, North Scott, Davenport Central, Clinton and No. 9 Pleasant Valley. The Warriors host the winner of the Davenport North-North Scott game on Feb. 19. The regional final is Feb. 22 at Prairie.
Kennedy plays at Prairie on Feb. 16 in a first-round game in Region 3. The winner plays at No. 8 Iowa City High on Feb. 19. The other three teams in the region are Des Moines North, West Des Moines Valley and No. 7 Southeast Polk. The regional final is Feb. 22 at Newton.
Marion gets a home game against Anamosa in the first round of the Class 3A tournament, but then likely would have to play at second-ranked Mount Vernon. The Mustangs won the Class 2A title last year. No. 12 Waverly-Shell Rock also is in the region.
The state tournament is Feb. 28-March 5 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
