Paige nets 23 as Lions trim Waukee

Marcus Paige has not lost a basketball game in the Linn-Mar High School gym since he joined the Lions as a freshman in 2008.

He wasn't going to let a sprained ankle get in the way of that winning streak Tuesday night.

Paige popped in 23 points as Linn-Mar rallied to defeat Waukee, 53-48, in a season opener that matched two of the premier Class 4A programs in the state.

Paige rolled his right ankle in practice Monday night and was questionable until 90 minutes before tipoff.

"I just wanted to come out here and help my team and do whatever I could," he said. "I thought if I hadn't played I would have left them hanging. I'm glad I was able to make it through the game."

Paige was limping after the game, but happy he played as the 2011 state champions rallied from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

'Twin Towers' post career highs for Warriors

WATERLOO - Let’s call them the “Twin Towers.”

Abby Herb and Kelli Klaus were an unstoppable two-girl wrecking crew with career-highs in both points and rebounds Tuesday night as No. 7 Washington rolled by Waterloo East, 89-32, in an easy Mississippi Valley Conference opener in Waterloo.

Herb, a 6-footer, went inside and outside to hit 12 of 17 shots for a career-best 25 points and 14 rebounds. The junior forward scored 14 of her team’s first 16 points as the Warriors raced to a 21-2 lead.

Speedy Hawks sprint past Hempstead

Prairie unleashed a tenacious defense in the second quarter when it outscored Dubuque Hempstead by 15 points and sprinted past the Mustangs, 66-48, Tuesday night in a girls basketball game at Prairie.

“We’ve got the speed so we use it to our advantage,” said Prairie's Cyerra Hutchins, who repeatedly beat Hempstead down the court and wound up with a game-high 16 points. “It’s my job to get down there and my teammates are really good at getting the ball to me when I get there.”

The primary “driver” of Prairie’s fast break was sophomore Madison Dellamuth, who contributed 13 points to go with an outstanding floor game.

McDougall leads Prairie to payback win

Prairie Coach James Moses saw his game plan Monday night go right out the window before the team even broke a sweat.

He’s been touting junior point guard Jace Hanna, the Hawks’ starting quarterback this fall, as the key guy to run the show on the basketball court this winter.

In the season opener at home against Davenport West, however, Hanna picked up his second foul in the first two minutes of the game and sat the rest of the half.

He was whistled for his third foul after just nine seconds in the third quarter, then his fourth five minutes later and sat some more.
