Kernels pitcher towers above the crowd

Aaron Slegers is 6-foot-10 and a star athlete, so you might automatically assume he was a star basketball player somewhere.

Actually, he never made it past the junior varsity team in high school. Baseball has been another story, however.

Slegers helped the Indiana Hoosiers reach the College World Series last year as a 6-foot-10 righthander and he'll get the starting nod Thursday night when the Cedar Rapids Kernels begin the 2014 Midwest League season against Clinton at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., weather permitting (bring your parkas and umbrellas).

Christensen plans to enjoy home cooking

Chad Christensen is a college graduate and a pro baseball player, but he's living at his mother's house in Cedar Rapids now while playing for the Kernels, and that means the old rules still apply.

He'll be expected to take out the garbage, wash the dishes, cut the grass and help with all the other household chores.

"Of course he does. And he knows that!" said Tracy Christensen, his mother. "I know he'll be a good help."

Christensen jokingly claimed he'll be too busy playing for the Kernels to help out around the house. "I'll tell her I have to devote all my energy to baseball," he said.

As it turns out, Christensen is a pretty good cook and will be happy to help around the house as much as possible.

"He said Sunday nights when the weather gets warm, he'll grill just about every night," offered Tracy. "I said that would be awesome."

Christensen, an all-stater at Washington High School, called his mother Saturday morning with the good news about making the club.

Sweeting tosses 1-hitter for Kirkwood

David Sweeting pitched a one-hit shutout Thursday as the Kirkwood Community College Eagles blanked Marshalltown, 1-0, in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Kirkwood's Cedar Rapids campus.

Marshalltown won the second game, 5-0.

Sweeting, a sophomore from the Bahamas, struck out five batters and did not walk anyone in his third straight victory for the Eagles (11-7).

The first game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the seventh and last inning. Shawn Hagarty reached first base on an error, was bunted to second base and scored on an RBI single to right field by Matt Paciello.

Keaton Blackford took the loss in the second game for Kirkwood. He was reached for five runs (three earned) in six innings. The Eagles got only four hits in the game.

Ordman resigns as Jefferson coach

Stu Ordman announced Tuesday morning that he has resigned as the boys basketball coach at Cedar Rapids Jefferson to become the new coach at Iowa City Regina.

Ordman, who lives in Iowa City, succeeds Randy Larson at Regina.

Ordman compiled a 232-160 record in 17 years as the head coach at Jefferson with four trips to the state tournament in 1999, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The J-Hawks finished 7-15 this past season.

Kellen Sweeney promoted to Dunedin

Cedar Rapids Jefferson graduate Kellen Sweeney has been promoted to the Dunedin Blue Jays in the High-A Florida State League, the club confirmed Tuesday.

An earlier report by the Metro Sports Report that Sweeney would be assigned to the Lansing Lugnuts in the Low-A Midwest League was incorrect.

Sweeney, 22, was selected in the second round of the 2010 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. He has hit .198 with 11 home runs and 81 RBIs in 244 games in the minor leagues.

Sweeney is listed as a third baseman on the Dunedin roster.
