Shorthanded Riders blanked by Waterloo

Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Coach Mark Carlson hates excuses, but facts are facts.

Five RoughRiders who have played in 60 games this season did not dress for Cedar Rapids Friday night in its USHL game against the Waterloo Black Hawks, including four forwards and several of their top scorers.

Their absence undoubtedly contributed to the RoughRiders absorbing their first shutout of the year, 3-0, before 2,648 fans who were hoping for a better result.

"We're missing those guys, but the other guys that were playing had a tremendous opportunity tonight to get out and prove some things," said Carlson. "Did we miss those guys? For sure. But the guys we were playing have to work hard and just didn't get the job done."

The customized magazine covers are for all 21 varsity sports and will utilize pictures of Metro athletes that MSR photographers have taken in action.

Celebrate boys hoops at MSR Classic

It's finally here.

After a year of planning, fussing, tweaking and promoting the first Metro Sports Report Classic, the day of the big event is finally here.

All eight Metro boys basketball teams will gather this Saturday at Johnson Hall on the Kirkwood Community College campus in southwest Cedar Rapids to celebrate the grand old sport and enjoy a day of community spirit.

You've heard of a win-win situation before, but we believe this is a win-win-win-win-win situation for everyone involved.

Special acts set for MSR Classic

There will be special entertainment at the Metro Sports Report Classic on Saturday, in additional to the four high school basketball games.

Doug Sayers, a world champion juggler, will perform during halftime of Game 1 and Game 3. Sayers grew up in Cedar Rapids and is a phenomenal entertainer.

Members of the Salvation Army boys and girls basketball programs will be featured in short games during the halftimes of Game 1 and Game 3.

RoughRiders trimmed by Waterloo, 3-2

WATERLOO - Peter Krieger scored on a power play early in the third period Thursday as the Waterloo Black Hawks trimmed the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 3-2, in a USHL game before 3,248 fans at Young Arena.

Cedar Rapids (12-4-1) and Waterloo (13-5) traded goals in the first two periods.

Andrew Poturalski gave the RoughRiders a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Patrick Russell tied it for the Black Hawks.
