Cougars, Jenks win regional swim titles

Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Jennifer Jenks were the big winners at the regional swimming meets on Saturday.

Kennedy trimmed Iowa City West, 432.5 to 424, for the team championship at the regional in Iowa City and qualified for the state meet in nine events.

Michele Wasta of Kennedy won the regional title in the 100 butterfly. The Cougars also claimed regional crowns in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Jenks, a freshman at Linn-Mar, captured the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle at the regional meet in Cedar Falls. Her time of 51.30 seconds in the 100 freestyle leads all qualifiers for the state meet.

Larson paces KCC women in romp

WEST BURLINGTON - Freshman Kirsten Larson hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points Saturday as Kirkwood clobbered Lewis & Clark, 88-48, in the second round of the Southeastern Classic in West Burlington.

Taylor Silva collected 10 points and eight assists for the Eagles (2-0). Hanna Haynes contributed 10 points and nine rebounds. Zoe Kelso scored 13 points.

Twelve players scored for Kirkwood.

Lunsford helps Cougars dance to victory

If the Fine Arts Department at Kennedy High School ever stages a musical about a football team, Jordan Lunsford would land the leading role in a snap.

Lunsford is a member of the Show Choir at Kennedy and also performs in plays. On top of that, he's the leading tackler on the football team that's headed to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs Monday night against Davenport Assumption.

He can sing, he can dance, he can act - and he can knock you to smithereens on a football field. "He's a pretty amazing kid," Kennedy football coach Tim Lewis said Friday after practice.

Augie Holmquist: Jefferson's forgotten man

The year was 1963 and Jefferson High School boasted a sophomore football team that finished its season undefeated and conference champions.

With the help of the class preceding it and the class following, this team would go on to be undefeated throughout its three seasons at Jefferson. The Des Moines Register would years later name the Jefferson football team of 1965 as the eighth-best team in Iowa sports history.

That 1965 team was made up of many accomplished athletes who were later named to the Jefferson Hall of Fame. In all, 15 members of the 1965 roster went on to participate in college sports. Jefferson historian Bob Ask calls this the “apex of sports in Jefferson history.”

MSR Classic just 4 weeks away

The countdown has begun for a special day of high school basketball in the Metro community.

The first Metro Sports Report Classic, presented by Play It Again Sports Cedar Rapids, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Johnson Hall on the Kirkwood Community College campus in southwest Cedar Rapids.

All eight boys basketball teams from the Metro area will be playing in the Classic, making this the first time that all eight schools will be playing in the same event on the same day in the same gym.
