Kernels installing new $150,000 field

Nobody likes a lawn that's strangled by weeds and has unsightly brown spots in the grass, and it's especially worrisome if million-dollar bonus babies are running on your lawn at full speed and trying to make sliding catches.

That's why the Cedar Rapids Kernels plan to install a new $150,000 grass field at Veterans Memorial Stadium this fall.

The field has been infected with poa, which Kernels General Manager Doug Nelson described as a "weed grass" whose roots grow sideways and choke the regular grass. It's led to discoloration in the outfield and unstable sod.

Jenn Jenks wins Metro Spotlight Award

Linn-Mar freshman Jennifer Jenks is this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Jenks has burst onto the scene this year as one of the top swimmers in the state. She ranks No.1 in the 50-yard freestyle, No.1 in the 100-yard freestyle and No.2 in the 200-yard freestyle.

Jenks broke four records Tuesday during a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Jefferson. She snapped pool records in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle that had stood for more than 20 years, and she broke the Linn-Mar school records in those events as well.

Nelson wins Metro Spotlight Award

Xavier senior Matt Nelson has been selected as this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Nelson, who stands 6-foot-8, 250 pounds, is an all-state defensive end and tight end for the top-ranked Xavier football team. The Saints are 4-0 and have outscored their opponents, 140-7, with three straight shutouts.

Nelson has made 10 tackles this season, with three tackles-for-loss and two sacks for a defensive unit that does not spend much time on the field. The stingy Saints have allowed only 93 yards per game and have collected three straight shutouts. He has caught four passes for 20 yards and a touchdown.

Marion stuns Xavier for title

All season long, the Marion High School girls have seemed to lack the killer instinct on the volleyball court.

“We've been struggling putting teams away,” acknowledged star defender Abby Phillips.

It looked like it might be more of the same Saturday in their own eight-team invitational tournament.

They reached the championship final with an upset over highly regarded Grundy Center, but quickly lost the first game to an even more formidable foe in Xavier.
