Kernels drop 2nd straight to Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. – The Beloit Snappers topped the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-3, Thursday in Midwest League baseball at Pohlman Field.

The Kernels stranded 10 runners on base. They scored all three of their runs in the second inning.

It looked like the game would turn into a slugfest as Snappers led 4-3 after two innings, but Beloit’s single tally in the fifth inning was the only other run scored the rest of the game.

Eagles 10th after Day 3 at nationals

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. - Kirkwood slipped one spot to 10th place Thursday during the third day of the NJCAA Division II men's golf tournament at Goose Pond Colony.

The Eagles shot a 9-over par 297 as a team to fall 43 shots behind leader South Mountain, Ariz. However, Kirkwood is only six shots out of fourth place with one day left in the tournament.

Kirkwood's Sean Cleary moved up two spots and is in a tie for 18th in medal play. Cleary shot an even par 72. He is nine shots behind leader Steve Souchek of John A. Logan, Ill.

3 Eagles named JUCO All-Americans

Kirkwood softball players Amber Logemann, Kayla Tatge and Haylee Krack have been named first team Division II All-Americans in softball by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Logemann compiled a 27-4 record and 0.58 ERA as Kirkwood's top pitcher. She struck out 356 batters in 180.1 innings. Logemann led the nation in ERA and strikeouts.

Tatge hit 25 home runs, drove in 72 runs and hit .385. She led the nation in home runs.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Rancho Cucamonga (Dodgers)) - Did not play Thursday in the Quakes' 8-5, 10-inning loss to Visalia. Season stats: G - 38, Avg. - .281, AB - 139, H - 39, HR - 5, RBI - 22, SB - 5.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Lansing (Blue Jays)) - Did not play Thursday in the Lugnuts' 6-1 win over Lake County. Season stats: G - 37, Avg. - .198, AB - 121, H - 24, HR - 3, RBI - 11, SB - 0.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Chicago Cubs) - Pinch hit in the seventh inning Thursday and delivered an RBI single in the Cubs' 4-2 loss to the Pirates. Season stats: G - 13, Avg. - .364, AB - 22, H - 8, HR - 1, RBI - 2, SB - 0.

 

Wash, Kennedy post shootout wins

On a miserable night of marathon boys soccer at Kingston Stadium Wednesday, highly ranked Washington and Kennedy both survived scares from lesser foes to make into Saturday substate finals.

Each Class 3A semifinal game was tied 1-1 after two overtimes and decided in shootouts.

In the contest that started in drizzle at 5 p.m., fourth-ranked Washington escaped a scrappy Waterloo West bunch 5-4 on penalty kicks.

And in the nightcap that ended at 10:15 in a misty fog, fifth-ranked Kennedy squeaked by a young Dubuque Hempstead crew 4-2 in the shootout.
