Two coaching greats ride into the sunset

Metro girls basketball will look, and feel, much different next season.

Two of the greats over the last two decades - and beyond - have stepped down from their head coaching positions. Larry Niemeyer at Jefferson and Dennis Roloff at Kennedy both departed last week.

Perhaps it was fitting that these two fine gentlemen both left within 24 hours of one another, because they are two of the best of friends on and off the court. In fact, Roloff was an assistant coach for several years at Jefferson under Niemeyer, learning many of the finer points of the game. They were lessons he took across town to Kennedy.

MYFA eyes more fields near Cedar River

More popular than it has ever been in its 42-year history, the Metro Youth Football Association program is looking to expand its operation by putting at least three fields in the proposed greenway area on the west side of the Cedar River.

"We absolutely need more fields,” said Roger Gruwell, a member of the MYFA executive board. “We can’t put any more where we’re at, and we think it would be a good thing to have a facility on the west side of town.”

The proposal is in the very early stages, but Cedar Rapids city officials have so far been receptive to the idea.

“Metro Youth Football has been a tremendous organization in our community for a long time,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Julie Sina, who has had two sons and now a grandson in the program. “We’ll try to do everything we can to make it happen. We think it would be very good for the community.”

MYFA board members are scheduled to make a proposal to the parks commission Tuesday morning. They’ve already met with City Manger Jeff Pomeranz and Community Development Director Christine Butterfield.

Brian Webb named Jefferson football coach

Brian Webb once won the "Animal" award for being the toughest and hardest-working football player at Cedar Falls High School.

Now Webb will be returning to the Mississippi Valley Conference to tackle what could be a beastly job as the new head football coach at Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

Webb, 32, was announced as Jefferson's new coach Saturday night. He's been the head coach at Carroll Kuemper High School the past two years, where he compiled an 18-4 record and reached the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state tournament last fall and was named the District 2 Coach of the Year.
