Paige nets 34 as Lions top City High

Iowa City High’s Jerel Moore and Linn-Mar’s Marcus Paige posed for pictures together after the game on Friday night. But most of the “Kodak moments” took place on the basketball court.

The two close friends put on a highlight show as Paige scored 34 points and Moore 27 in the fifth-ranked Lions’ 76-65 Class 4A substate semifinal victory at the Linn-Mar gym.

The two stars have played summer ball together for several years with All-Iowa Attack, an AAU club team, and know each other well.

Kramer scores 22 in J-Hawks' win

All that’s separating the Jefferson boys from a return trip to the boys state basketball tournament is a rematch with Cedar Falls next Tuesday night.

The J-Hawks disposed of Marshalltown, 64-58, Friday night in a Class 4A substate semifinal at Jefferson. They play No. 3 Cedar Falls on Tuesday in the substate final at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls.

Witte, Wempen share Metro mat honor

State champions Zach Witte from Prairie and Matt Wempen from Linn-Mar have been named Metro wrestlers of the year in a vote of coaches.

Witte, a senior, is a two-time state champion. He won the 152-pound crown at last week's state meet after winning at 145 in 2011. He also finished second as a freshman in 2009. He has signed to wrestle at the University of Northern Iowa.

Wempen, a freshman, won the 106-pound title at last week's state meet. He finished the season with a 48-2 record.

Jeff girls scramble to 2nd in 2A bowling

DES MOINES -- Cedar Rapids Jefferson rallied from a sixth-place standing after the first round to claim second Friday at the Class 2A girls state bowling tournament at Plaza Lanes.

Ottumwa placed three bowlers in the top 10 and ran away with the title with 3101 points. Jefferson was second with 2784, followed by Muscatine (2756), Waterloo West (2745) and Waukee (2734). Kennedy finished sixth with 2641.

Jefferson was in sixth place after the first round, but was only 20 pins behind second-place Waukee. The J-Hawks rolled a 943 Baker round to claim second.

Trcka places 8th at state bowling meet

DES MOINES - Tara Trcka enjoyed a magical day at the girls state bowling tournament in 2011, but the Xavier High School junior never found the groove in this year's Class 1A meet.

Trcka rolled a three-game series of 579 Thursday and finished eighth in the individual standings. Trcka and the Saints placed seventh in the team competition.

Trcka bowled a 674 series last year in the state tournament as a sophomore to claim top honors, but her 579 total this year was a drop of 95 total pins.
