Jeremy Cline fires perfect 300

IOWA CITY -- Jeremy Cline fired a perfect game of 300 and a 517 series to lead Prairie past Iowa City High, 3119-2811, Friday in boys bowling at Colonial Lanes.

Cline shot a 217 in his first game. He ripped off 12 straight strikes in his second game for a 300.

Cline's 300 is the third for a Prairie boys bowler. Eric Bolton shot one in 2007. Drew Balta had a 300 and 288 for a 588 series in the 2010 season.

Iowa fans obsessed with coaching moves

It's rather amazing to me that passionate Iowa football fans could be as interested in assistant coaches as they have been at this time. Even in the midst of an Iowa winter, Hawkeye coaching assignments have been at the forefront of sports coverage.

One change that has occurred in college football has been the elevation of coordinators and play-callers to the forefront of television coverage of the college game. And so it is with Iowa and its current personnel changes and future changes.

I have always been of the opinion that the coordinators and football staff were serving at the behest of the head football coach. And therefore, the head coach was the man who is responsible for the total program.

Cedar Valley proud of historic season

LISBON - The six members of the Cedar Valley Christian girls basketball team, all smiles, posed for pictures Thursday night like they accomplished something special this season.

They were absolutely right.

The Huskies defied steep odds and won four ballgames during their maiden year as members of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, establishing the foundation for better days ahead.

"They more than exceeded my expectations," said Coach Craig Foote. "I'm just extremely proud of them. They've been fun to work with. I'm proud of their character."

Lisbon defeated Cedar Valley Christian, 63-37, in the opening round of the Class 1A regional tournament Thursday, leaving the Huskies with a 4-and-18 record for the campaign. The Huskies were beaten, but not dismayed.

Herb leads Warriors by Linn-Mar, 55-33

Abby Herb wasn’t surprised when she swished her first 3-pointer of the season Thursday night. After all, she’s been doing everything else for Cedar Rapids Washington.

Herb scored 10 of her team’s first 24 points and had a game-high 14 markers, seven rebounds and two blocks to spearhead a 55-33 victory by the Warriors at Linn-Mar.
