Kennedy and Washington will bump heads in a regular-season boys basketball game Tuesday night at Washington, but it will only be the appetizer.

The real course will be served on Feb. 18 when the Cougars and Warriors collide in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A substate tournament at Kennedy.

The IHSAA announced all the pairings for the Class 3A and Class 4A playoffs on Monday.

Washington clipped Kennedy, 53-50, in their first meeting at Kennedy on Dec. 14. That snapped a long losing streak for the Warriors, but the Warriors have continued to improve and have won three games this season.

All of the Class 4A teams in the Metro area will play substate openers on Feb. 18:

The Marion Indians will play at Center Point-Urbana on Feb. 18 in the opening round of the Class 3A district tournament.

All of the Metro teams could face major obstacles in the postseason tournaments.

Kennedy or Washington would meet third-ranked Western Dubuque in the substate semifinals at Western Dubuque on Feb. 22.

Xavier would face fourth-ranked Dubuque Senior in the substate semifinals at Dubuque Senior on Feb. 22, while Linn-Mar could face Dubuque Senior in the substate finals on Feb. 26.

Prairie would face top-ranked Iowa City West in the substate semifinals at Iowa City West on Feb. 22, while Jefferson could face Iowa City West in the substate finals on Feb. 26.

The Marion Indians could face third-ranked Davenport Assumption in the Class 3A substate finals on Feb. 25.
