GRAND CHUTE, Wis. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels came out swinging Monday night in a 10-2 runaway over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in a Midwest League game before 3,036 fans at Fox Cities Stadium.

Cedar Rapids (4-1) scored three runs apiece in the first and second innings for an early 6-0 lead to support David Hurlbut, who had a quality start on the mound.

The Kernels began both innings with back-to-back walks to get things going. Dalton Hicks hit a double off the right-field wall to bring home Byron Buxton for a 1-0 lead, then Adam Brett Walker smacked a double off the left-field wall to drive in Romy Jimenez and Hicks for a 3-0 lead.

Buxton hit a three-run homer in the second inning after two more walks for a 6-0 bulge.

Hurlbut (1-0) went six innings for the Kernels. He allowed two runs on three hits, with five strikeouts and no walks. Clint Coulter hit a two-run homer for Wisconsin in the fourth inning against Hurlbut to pull the Timber Rattlers within 6-2.

Travis Harrison hit a solo run for the Kernels in the fifth inning to make it 7-2.

Cedar Rapids added three unearned runs in the eighth inning. The highlight was a two-run single by Walker to make it 10-2.

Tyler Jones pitched two innings of no-hit relief for Cedar Rapids. Chris Mazza tossed the ninth inning and allowed one hit.

The same two teams will meet Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. with Brett Lee on the mound for Cedar Rapids.
