Washpun is Warriors' little big man

Washington senior Wes Washpun is not your typical 6-foot-1 point guard.

First of all, he's an exceptional 6-foot-1 point guard, not a typical point guard, who's blessed with tremendous speed, quickness, ballhanding abilities, defensive prowess, leadership and passing skills, all of which will probably land him a Division I scholarship this spring.

In addition to all that, he ranks second in the Metro in blocked shots and fourth in rebounding, big-time numbers that normally are associated with 'big man' stats.

Washpun ranks in the top-4 in five Metro categories this week: second in blocked shots (41), second in steals (59), third in assists (74), fourth
in rebounds (6.2 per game) and fourth in scoring (18.1 per game).

His free-throw shooting has improved to 54.8 percent after sitting below 50 percent part of the season, but he needs to improve at the foul line and from behind the 3-point arc (27.5%) to elevate his game even higher.

Washpun compares favorably to Linn-Mar point guard Marcus Paige in most categories, but pales in comparison on free throws and 3-pointers. Paige hits 81.6 percent of his foul shots and 50 percent of his 3-pointers, one of the many reasons he'll play college basketball at North Carolina.

Jefferson senior Jarrod Uthoff continues to lead the state in scoring at 26.2 points per game. He also leads the Metro in rebounding (10.6), blocked shots (57) and free-throw shooting (85.2%).

Kasey Semler of Marion continues to lead all Class 3A players in scoring at 22.6 points.
