Kernels drubbed by Peoria, 13-4

PEORIA, Ill. - The Peoria Chiefs scored all their runs in the fifth and sixth innings and cruised to a 13-4 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels Thursday night before 1,191 fans at Peoria Chiefs Stadium.

The Chiefs scored nine runs in the fifth inning, sending 13 men to the plate.

Peoria was without a base hit until the fifth, but the Chiefs were rolling once the first one was allowed. After the first single, nine straight men reached base and Peoria grabbed a 9-3 lead.

The Kernels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as four singles led to a run. Adam Brett Walker's RBI single to right plated Jorge Polanco.

J.D. Williams blasted a two-run homer to the left field berm in the second inning to put the Kernels up 3-0. Tyler Grimes tripled to right-center one batter earlier.

Peoria added four runs on two extra base hits in the sixth inning, extending its lead to 13-3.

An RBI single by Dalton Hicks in the eighth inning brought Niko Goodrum home, cutting the Peoria lead to 13-4.

The Kernels stranded a season-high 14 men on base. They left at least one man on base in every inning.

Taylor Rogers (0-1) started and took the loss for the Kernels, allowing eight runs over 4.1 innings. Manuel Soliman allowed five runs (two earned) in 1.1 innings. Chris Mazza pitched 2.1 scoreless innings.

Jhonny Polanco (1-1) recorded the win in relief for Peoria, pitching two scoreless innings.
