J-Hawks bring home 2 silver medals

DES MOINES - Maliya Ratliffe, Taylor Jacobson and Rachel Broghammer were just sophomores in 2011 when they helped Cedar Rapids Jefferson win the 4x200 relay at the Class 4A state track meet.

The J-Hawks served notice Friday that they might be ready for an encore this year as seniors.

Ratliffe, Jacobson and Broghammer helped Jefferson finish a tight second in the 4x200 relay at the 104th Drake Relays Friday behind Des Moines Roosevelt, which is loaded with top sprinters.

Summer Carber joined Ratliffe, Jacobson and Broghammer in the winners circle at the state meet two years ago. Carber graduated last year and now sophomore Lucy Schneekloth is a member of the club.

Roosevelt won Friday's race in 1:42.24. The J-Hawks were a tick behind in 1:42.39, slicing two seconds off their previous best this season.

The Jefferson girls were proud of their accomplishment, but not satisfied with placing second.

"I don't know how to put it into words," said Broghammer. "It was very, very exciting, but at the very end, when I saw the Roosevelt girl come up ... It was just hard to keep pushing.

"She was a good competitor and got me at the end, but I am so proud of how everyone ran."

Jalynn Roberts-Lewis was the Roosevelt anchor runner who nipped Broghammer at the wire.

Broghammer thinks the J-Hawks will be able to defeat Roosevelt if there's a rematch in the Class 4A state meet next month. "We've done it before," she said, referring to the state title in 2011. "We'll be there."

Jefferson collected another silver medal Friday when senior Timauntay Jones placed second in the 800 meter run in 1:56.01. Jason Thomas of Dowling Catholic won the race in 1:55.18, tying the meet record.

Jefferson placed third in the boys 1600 sprint medley with Dan Larson, Jordan Selby, Dylan Chittick and Jones. Washington finished ninth in the same race with Mitch Bredeson, Jason Oney, Nick Corbett and Trevor Luebe.

Derek Jacobus of Kennedy placed fourth in the long jump at 22 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Famiek Cook of Kennedy finished fifth in the long jump at 22 feet, 2 inches.

Nick Steingreaber of Xavier took fourth in the 100 meter dash in 11.52 seconds.

Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar placed fifth in the 800 meter run 2:13.35. She won the 3000 meter run on Thursday. Amber Decker of Linn-Mar took eighth in 800 in 2:15.58. Jenks and Decker are both freshmen.

Madison Ranschau of Jefferson finished eighth in the 100 hurdles. Natalie Rumer of Prairie was ninth in the shot put. Craig Murtha of Xavier finished 10th in the discus. Jefferson placed 10th in the 4x200 relay with Shaquille Harbor, Selby, Chittick and Larson.
