No-no doubt Wash is better ballclub

Tony Lombardi is trying to keep it simple.

His Washington Warriors baseball team has starters ranging from an eighth-grader (his son Rocky) to a possible soon-to-be professional baseball player (A.J. Puk) and several others in-between.

“I am really proud of these kids, they have come a long way,” Lombardi said after his team’s sweep of Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Friday night at Jefferson. “Our goal is to come out here and be the kind of team you have to beat. That was not our moniker a year ago.”

Lombardi has liked what he has seen so far. Friday’s 7-1 and 6-3 wins over the J-Hawks have Washington off to a 5-1 start.

Make no mistake, the Warriors are far from a finished product. They feature a likely high-round draft pick in Puk in the upcoming professional draft and could lose his services at that time.

“It’s great to have A.J. Puk,” Lombardi said. “Honestly, we did not know that until the start of the season. I think he is having a lot of fun playing right now.”

But there is plenty beyond Puk. He is the ace of the pitching staff, but the Warriors star played in the field as teammates Matt Troendle, Zach Christensen and Noah Burdt were the mound stars.

Troendle, a left-hander who changes speeds well, tossed a two-hitter in the opener. Christensen and Burdt combined for a no-hitter in the nightcap.

“Really, a no-hitter?” Burdt said when told the news. “It sure didn’t feel like a no-hitter. That’s pretty cool.”

Troendle was just as good in the opener, limiting the J-Hawks (1-5) to a bloop single to center by Ben Koering and a looper from Cam Frazier that just fell out of Burdt’s glove as he dove for it in right field.

A combination of wild pitches and passed balls allowed Washington to score its first four runs in the opener. Big first baseman Zac Gillis drove home the other three Warrior runs with a pair of singles.

Burdt had an odd line in the opener, having just one official at bat where he reached on an error. He also reached three times on walks and scored four runs.

“I just worked hard at the plate and tried to have really good discipline,” he said. “I looked at a lot of pitches and I really worked hard once I got on the bases.”

Washington was the generous team to start the nightcap as two walks two errors, a wild pitch and a passed ball in the first inning gave the J-Hawks a 2-0 lead.

That margin held until the fifth when the Warriors scored five times with two outs. Johnny Dobbs drew a bases-loaded walk off Ky Kramer to plate the first round. Gillis then slapped a single to right plating two more.

Pinch-hitter Alec Nichols completed the scoring when he greeted reliever Dylan Wright with another two-run single.

Jefferson loaded the bases in the sixth and actually scored another run in the seventh without a hit.

“It’s just frustrating,” said first-year Jefferson Coach Kyle Rodenkirk. “We got a young team, but there’s still no excuse (for getting two hits in the twinbill).  We left 11 runners in scoring position and I think they’re pressing, trying to do too much with it.

“I think once we start to relax, things will come at the plate,” he continued. “Tonight wasn’t good, but there is a lot of baseball to play this summer and hopefully we will keep working and getting better.”
