Prairie hammers J-Hawks in sweep

Pitching that ranged from solid to stellar allowed Cedar Rapids Prairie to sweep a doubleheader from Jefferson Wednesday night at Jefferson’s home field.

The stellar performance came in the first game from Spencer Dean. The senior right-hander allowed just one hit in a 15-1 rout. The Hawks took the nightcap, 7-4.

With Dean striking out five J-Hawks while walking one, Prairie scored in every inning but the first, touching three pitchers for 16 hits.

Senior Brennan Hammer hammered an RBI double and two home runs, including a grand slam in the seven-run sixth. He drove in six runs in the opener and two more in the nightcap.

Tyler Butz opened the Prairie scoring, hitting the first pitch of the second inning over the right-field wall.

Jefferson’s run came in the third, when Drew Johnson reached first on an error by Prairie shortstop Ty Mougin. He was sacrificed to second by Spencer VanScoyoc, then scored on Cameron Frazier’s sacrifice fly to left.

Jefferson’s only hit was a sixth-inning single by Nathan Karlan.

Prairie committed more errors – four to Jefferson’s one – in the nightcap, but starting pitcher Nic Mougin scattered eight hits over 5.2 innings.

Junior lefthander Benjamin Milks closed out the game for Prairie, walking his first hitter, VanScoyoc, on four pitches but then inducing Frazier to ground to short with the bases loaded. Milks struck out the side in the seventh to pick up a save.

Prairie opened scoring in the second. Back-to-back one-out doubles by Blake Stallman and Dylan Becker, a mishandled grounder and Hammer's RBI single helped to produce four runs.

Jefferson answered with two unearned runs.

Prairie added two runs in the fifth on singles by Tyler Votroubek and Caleb Davison and a double by Stallman. Jefferson answered again with two runs on doubles by VanScoyoc and Ben Koering, and Ky Kramer’s single.

Prairie added a run in the sixth when Becker singled, advanced on Ty Mougin’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on Hammer’s sacrifice fly.

The sweep boosted Prairie to 11-6 overall, 7-3 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. Jefferson fell to 4-12, 3-7.
