Football prevues - Sept. 6

The second week of the prep football season brings more crossover matches in the Mississippi Valley Conference and one huge non-district encounter for the Marion Indians.

Four games take place on Metro fields, highlighted by Kennedy's trip to Prairie. A year ago these teams engaged in a highly entertaining shootout that showcased Prairie's Demetrius Harper (13 catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns, and a 90-yard kickoff return for a score) and Kennedy's Alex Hillyer (214 yards rushing and two TDS). Those guys are gone, however, now teammates at Iowa Western Community College.

This appears to be a more traditional, smash-mouth matchup. And both teams have brawn in the lines, making for an interesting tilt.

Elsewhere in he Metro, Jefferson travels to Xavier, Dubuque Senior is at Linn-Mar and Washington hosts Iowa City West at Kingston Stadium.

Marion travels to Decorah to take on the defending state champion Vikings, who throttled the Indians 35-0 a year ago.

Revenge is not out of the realm of possibility.

Friday

Jefferson (0-1) at Xavier (1-0)

Site: Saints Field

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: None

Last meeting: Xavier 49, Jefferson 0 (Aug. 30, 2012)

Line: Xavier by 31

Jefferson - The J-Hawks started the season last week with a 24-7 loss to Prairie. Jefferson was held to 184 total yards. QB Layne Sullivan ran 23 timees for a team-high 51 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Dakota Tomkins. Sullivan also was intercepted three times. The Jeff defense was worn down by Prairie's mammoth offensive line in the second half. Prairie totaled 246 yards rushing on 39 carries, 6.3 yards per carry. The J-Hawks will have to shore that up against an extremely talented Xavier outfit to have a chance.

Xavier - The Saints opened the season with a 35-7 win over Dubuque Hempstead last Friday. Senior QB Quinton Scholer ran for 99 yards and two TDs, and completed 8-of-10 passes for 112 yards and two TDs. It was his first varsity start at quarterback and it was a good one. Xavier totaled only 258 yards on offense, but the Saints held Hempstead to 137 total yards. Defense is this club's strength, just like last season when the Saints reached the Class 4A championship. Jefferson is an improving team, but Xavier is the best in the state.

Kennedy (1-0) at Prairie (1-0)

Site: John Wall Field

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: KGYM (AM-1600/FM-107.5)

Television: MC-22 (Tape delayed broadcasts Saturday at 9 p.m., Sunday at 6 p.m.)

Last meeting: Prairie 41, Kennedy 33 (Aug. 31, 2012)

Line: Prairie by 7

Kennedy - The Cougars beat Washington, 14-10, in their season opener last Friday. Kennedy overcame a 10-0 deficit with a TD late in the first half and another in the third quarter to claim the win. RB Miles Moa ran for 108 yards and caught a TD pass. QB Derek Jacobus, making his first start for the Cougars, ran for 58 yards and passed for 61.

The Cougars managed 231 offensive yards and held Washington to 232. A win is a win, and this was one that had escaped the Cougars in recent seasons. The challenge Friday is slowing Prairie's behemoth offensive line.

Prairie - The Hawks downed Jefferson, 24-7, to open the season last Thursday.

RB Mitch Christensen galloped for 119 yards, including a 44-yard TD run. QB Trey Beckman had a 63-yard TD run and also threw a TD pass.

The Hawks generated 246 rushing yards, running behind 285-pound right guard Bryce Meeker and 345-pound right tackle Christian Ohrt. Prairie's defense also limited Jefferson to 184 total yards and picked off three passes. This promises to be a snot-knocker.

Dubuque Senior (0-1) at Linn-Mar (0-1)

Site: Linn-Mar Stadium

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: WMT (AM-600)

Last meeting: Dubuque Senior 39, Linn-Mar 36, 3OT (Aug. 30, 2012)

Line: Linn-Mar by 3

Dubuque Senior - The Rams were upset by Waterloo West, 13-7, in their season opener last Thursday. QB Austin Clemens completed 10 of 21 passes for 144 yards and a TD, but was intercepted twice. Clemens completed nearly 63 percent of his passes for nearly 1,600 yards and 17 TDs a year ago. Included were three TD passes against Linn-Mar. RB Mike Williams ran for 80 yards against West. The Rams were held to 239 total yards by the Wahawks. West had 307 yards of rushing offense behind QB Alex Young (24-166) and RB Lance Dunn (16-141). Perhaps this is a weakness the Lions, too, can exploit.

Linn-Mar - The Lions were bounced by Iowa City West, 67-28, in their season opener last Friday at Iowa City. Junior QB Ryan Schmidt ran for two TDs and passed for another, but was intercepted three times in his varsity debut. RB Ross Lembeck led the Lions with 110 yards rushing and a TD. Linn-Mar had an impressive 404 yards of total offense, but its defense surrendered 607 yards to West.

Senior does not appear to have the same firepower as West did. This has the makings of another high-scoring thriller.

Iowa City West (1-0) at Washington (0-1)

Site: Kingston Stadium

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: KXIC (AM-800)

Last meeting: Iowa City West 62, Washington 37 (Aug. 31, 2012)

Line: Iowa City West by 35

Iowa City West - The Trojans ripped Linn-Mar, 67-28, to open the season last Friday. QB Nate Boland threw three TD passes and ran for three more scores. He completed 13 of 19 passes for 297 yards and ran for an additional 65 yards. WR Anthony Batie caught five passes for 131 yards. RB Devin Raffensperger toted the ball nine times for 74 yards and two TDs. The Trojans rolled up 607 yards of offense, and allowed 404 yards. This is a high-powered offensive machine that likes putting big numbers up on opponents. West was ranked No.2 at the end of last season, but lost a plethora of talent. The Trojans are reloading, not rebuilding. And that's bad news for all of their opponents.

Washington - The Warriors dropped a 14-10 decision to Kennedy in their season opener last Friday. QB Reid Snitker passed for 103 yards and ran for 34. RB Johnny Dobbs scored a TD, but injured an ankle and did not play in the second half, affecting both the offense and defense. His status for the West game is unknown. The Warriors gained 232 yards of total offense and held Kennedy to 231. Washington has pulled stunners against West (a 66-37 win in 2011). This version of the Warriors doesn't appear to have that type of firepower.

Marion (1-0) at Decorah (1-0)

Site: Decorah

Time: 7 p.m.

Internet Radio: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/kdecsports

Last meeting: Decorah 35, Marion 0 (Aug. 31, 2012)

Line: Decorah by 10

Marion - The Indians whitewashed Mount Pleasant 40-0 in their opener last Friday. Colton Mowry carried the ball 18 times for 162 yards and two TDs. The Indians rolled up 328 yards of rushing offense. QB Trevor Hardman completed 4 of 9 passes and WR Quinn Cannoy caught all four for 101 yards and a TD. Marion's defense held Mount Pleasant to 68 total yards, only eight that came on the ground. The Indians also forced three turnovers.

Taking down Decorah on the road is a tall order. The Vikings are the Class 3A defending state champions and are ranked No.7 by the Des Moines Register. An upset is not out of the realm of possibility.

Decorah - The Vikings held off Waverly-Shell Rock, 17-14, in their opener last Friday at Waverly. Holt Johansen had 109 yards rushing. He had 1,166 rushing yards a year ago, 52 against Marion. QB Bryce Pierce completed only 3 of 7 passes for 53 yards against WSR, but one was a 30-yard TD strike to Mikhail Suvorov. Jake Hovden ran for 51 yards, but pulled off the game's big play with a 91-yard kickoff return for a TD. Pierce also kicked a 30-yard field goal. Decorah had 239 yards of total offense. The Vikings held WSR to 261 yards and both scores were via the pass. Decorah held Marion to 81 total yards a year ago.
