Warriors dropped by IC West, 49-8

Losing some of their stars from last year hasn't caused Iowa City West to miss a beat so far.

The Trojans went 10-1 a season ago, upset only by Cedar Rapids Prairie in the second round of the playoffs.

They graduated leading rusher Ezra Reiners and receivers Jeremy Morgan and Dondre Alexander. But that's hardly slowed them down any.

In their opening game last week, they blasted Linn-Mar, 67-28. And Friday night at Kingston Stadium they pasted Cedar Rapids Washington, 49-8.

“They're just scoring at will,” Warrior Coach Paul James pointed out. “That's been the story again this season. They did it to Linn-Mar, and tonight they did it to us.”

It doesn't take them long to put up points, either.

After receiving Washington's opening kickoff, it took them just four plays to score on a short pass from Nate Boland that Micah Kelsay took 58 yards into the end zone. The game was less than two minutes old.

Shell-shocked though they may have been, the Warriors rallied right back on their first possession. With a mix of runs and passes, quarterback Reid Snitker moved his team down field and connected with Connor Vincent for a 37-yard score. A two-point flip to Landen Akers put Washington ahead, 8-7.

From there, though, the Trojans were off to the races.

They took just three plays to score their next touchdown and scored again at the end of the first quarter for a 21-8 lead after getting the ball on Washington's 27-yard line when punter Tyler Burkle's knee touched the ground.

Snitker brought the Warriors back again, however, guiding them down to Trojans' 8-yard-line. But on a fourth-and-two, his pass went incomplete.

“We had a good game plan, and we were able to move the ball,” James said. “If we could have scored when we got down close to the goal and kept the game within a touchdown or two, the first half might have looked different.”

West was stopped on its next possession, for the first time, but the cagey Boland delivered a killing blow the next time with an 87-yard scoring scamper.

“He's a great quarterback,” said James of the senior who passed for 2,183 yards and 15 TDs last year.

Boland threw three TD passes against Linn-Mar and three more against Washington. He is the linchpin of an offensive juggernaut that piled up 492 total yards Friday and 607 the week before.

So far this year, he is 21 for 31 passing with no interceptions. Before sitting out the fourth quarter Friday, during which the clock ran continuously, Boland directed two more third-quarter scores. Both were set up by Warrior fumbles near mid-field.

Despite the lop-sided loss, James said he saw some improvements over his team's 14-10 defeat by Kennedy last week.

“We had some breakdowns and some missed tackles,” he said. “But (West) is a very good team and they caused a lot of our problems.

“We were looking for a more consistent effort tonight, and overall I think we did a lot better on our assignments.”

Next up for the Warriors, however, is powerful Cedar Falls.
