Uthoff nets 25 in J-Hawks' win

Jarrod Uthoff and the Jefferson J-Hawks have made mincemeat of Mississippi Athletic Conference teams this year.

It happened again Saturday (Dec. 4).

Uthoff tossed in 25 points as the J-Hawks opened a 27-point lead in the third quarter and cruised to a 66-49 victory over Davenport North at home.

Jefferson crushed Clinton, another MAC school, 70-25 in its season opener Tuesday night.

The J-Hawks displayed crisp passing and a balanced attack as Taylor Olson (11 points), Alec Saunders (10) and Tyler Meiborg (10) joined Uthoff in double figures.

“We’re a very unselfish team,” said Uthoff, a 6-foot-8 senior who has signed with Wisconsin. “I really like the way we’re passing the ball. And if we continue to do this, we’re going to be a tough team to beat.”

Olson led Jefferson with seven assists and Meiborg had five, but all five starters made at least one sparkling pass.

“They’ll move the basketball. It’s a really good group that way,” Jefferson Coach Stu Ordman said. “They really don’t care who scores. They’ll make the extra pass.”

Uthoff scored 12 points in the first quarter as the J-Hawks opened a 20-10 advantage. He displayed a deft touch around the basket with soft flips and quick, smooth moves.

Olson loves passing the ball to the big guy near the basket. “You can throw it to Uthoff differently than you can throw it to other players,” he remarked.

Meiborg got hot during a stretch in the third period as Jefferson bolted to a 53-26 lead, more than doubling Davenport North’s output at that point. Meiborg, a 6-foot senior, scored eight of his 10 points during the last four minutes of the quarter.

The J-Hawks never expanded on their 27-point bulge, but didn’t have to. Uthoff retired with 4:18 left in the third quarter with Jeff leading 61-36. He blocked five shots and grabbed six rebounds.

Virshaun Grant led Davenport North (0-2) with 16 points and Jordan Garrow had 15.
