Anderson eyes state doubles title

Linn-Mar senior Brady Anderson will not win the Class 2A state singles title again this year, but it's not because anyone beat him at the district meet Thursday.

Anderson hopes to double his fun this year by playing for the state doubles title with his buddy Trevor McCann, rather than trying to defend his singles crown.

They got off to a good start Thursday by winning the district title at Clinton with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Michael Porubcin and Bryce Brien of Bettendorf in the finals.

Tennis players have to choose what they want to do in the postseason - singles or doubles - because they are not allowed to do both, according to IHSAA rules. Anderson and McCann have been friends since they were little kids, hanging around the courts at the Cedar Rapids Country Club, and they make a formidable pair.

Doubles, anyone?

"It was something he wanted to do, and I felt the same way," Anderson said in a telephone conversation while the team was driving back from Clinton. "I've already won a state title. I want to get doubles."

Anderson and McCann qualified for the state doubles tournament that will be held May 30-31 at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center in Cedar Rapids.

Anderson will play his college tennis in Cedar Rapids as well. He said Thursday that he plans to play for the Coe Kohawks, who reached the second round of the NCAA Division III national tournament this year.

Tim Paulson, who normally plays No.2 singles for the Lions, won the district singles title Thursday with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jeff Teng of Hempstead to qualify for the state singles tournament.

"Paulson gets overlooked a lot, because he's behind Brady," said Linn-Mar Coach Chris Wundram. "Paulson is someone to be reckoned with. He's one of the top-5 players in the state."

Linn-Mar captured the overall team championship at the district meet and will play in the team substate finals May 24. The team state championships will be held in Cedar Rapids June 3.

Wundram applauded Anderson's unselfish decision to play doubles this year and try to win a state title with McCann.

"Brady really doesn't have anything left to prove," said Wundram. "He won the state singles title last year 6-0, 6-0. He wants to try and add a doubles title to his legacy.

"It's a cool thing," said Wundram. "When you win 6-0, 6-0, he wants another challenge. I'm all for it. If they want to give it a shot, I'm all for it. We thought it would be something fun to try."

The district championship matches were moved indoors to the Ashford University courts in Clinton Thursday due to rain.

"We played well," said Wundram. "We kind of had a goal to get as many guys as we could to state. Three is a good number. So we'll take it and move on to the next round."

Ben Myers of Linn-Mar placed third in the singles competition Thursday. Only the champion and runnerup advance to the state meet.

The Class 2A district meet in Cedar Rapids Thursday turned into the Iowa City West Invitational. The Trojans claimed both spots in the singles finals and both spots in the doubles finals with an impressive display.

Jackson Hoyt of Washington reached the semifinals before losing to Jiung Jung of Iowa City West, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0, as Jung survived leg cramps to finish the match.

Parker Muller of Washington also reached the semifinals before losing to Blake Oetting of Iowa City West, 6-1, 6-0.

Oliver Hammond and Ian Schwieger of Washington lost to Adam Dellos and Trent Schneider of Iowa City West in the doubles semifinals, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Jacob Donald and Alex Tvedte of Jefferson lost to Karl Wenzel and David DiLeo of Iowa City West in the other semifinal, 6-1, 6-1.

Washington finished second in the district team standings and Jefferson placed third. They will meet Saturday at 10 a.m. at Washington in the substate team semifinals.

The Class 1A district meet at Dubuque Wahlert Thursday was delayed by rain and will be finished Friday.
