Kernels fall to River Bandits, 4-2

DAVENPORT - The Cedar Rapids Kernels continued to have problems scoring runs Thursday and lost to the Quad Cities River Bandits, 4-2, in a Midwest League game before 2,808 fans at Modern Woodmen Park.

The Kernels (12-9) collected only four hits in the game, although three of them were doubles.

Jacob Nottingham and Derek Fisher socked home runs for the River Bandits (15-6), who won two games in the three-game series.

Zack Granite reached base twice for the Kernels and extended his team-best hitting streak to 10 games with a double down the left-field line to start the game.

Joshua James (1-0) earned his first win for Quad Cities. The right-hander retired 11 in a row at one point and allowed just one hit and struck out three in four shutout innings of relief.

John Curtiss (1-2) suffered the loss in his first start since being placed on the seven-day disabled list. The 21-year-old allowed three runs on five hits while striking out four in four innings.

Cedar Rapids cut the Quad Cities lead to 3-2 with two runs in the fifth. Brett Doe led off with a double down the left-field line, the catcher's first hit of the year. A fielding error allowed Granite to reach base safely and scored Doe to make it 3-1.

Granite stole second, his seventh stolen base of the year, and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Nick Gordon followed with an RBI ground-out. Gordon leads the Midwest League with 16 RBIs and Granite leads the league with 17 runs scored.

Quad Cities took a 4-2 lead in the fifth to finish the scoring.

Sam Clay allowed one run on one hit and three walks while striking out one in two innings of relief for Cedar Rapids. Zack Tillery extended his scoreless inning streak to four with two scoreless innings of relief. The right-hander allowed just one hit and struck out two.

The Kernels take on the Clinton LumberKings Friday night at 6:35 p.m. with Stephen Gonsalves (2-0, 0.90) on the mound.
