Gordon's key hit rallies Kernels

BELOIT, Wis. - Nick Gordon's two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth inning proved to be the winning hit as the Cedar Rapids Kernels rallied to defeat Beloit, 6-4, Thursday night before 532 fans at Pohlman Field.

Gordon's winning hit was ruled to not have been caught by Beloit left fielder Joe Bennie, who made a diving attempt for a catch that would have ended the game. Snappers' manager Fran Riordan argued the call with umpires and was ejected.

Edgar Corcino followed with his fourth hit of the night to score Gordon with an insurance run. The victory moved the Kernels to 51-34 while Beloit falls to 32-53.

Jorge Fernandez homered for the Kernels in a three-run fourth inning. Beloit took a 4-3 lead on an RBI triple by Jose Brizuela and an RBI single from Justin Higley.

The Snappers were hurt by four errors, three made by shortstop Yairo Munoz, giving him 21 for the season.

Randy LeBlanc (6-1) picked up the win in relief of starter Ethan Mildren, who allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings. Trevor Hildenberger pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his 11th save.

Koby Guana (2-1) took the loss for Beloit.

The Kernels continue their road trip Friday night, opening a series at Kane County. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
