District football assignments announced

Marion and Cedar Valley Christian found out Tuesday their district football assignments for the next two years.

Marion will be in District 6 in Class 3A and Cedar Valley will be in District 4 in 8-player.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released assignments for all teams, with the exception of the Class 4A Mississippi Valley and Mississippi Athletic conferences.

Classes 3A, 2A and 1A were reduced from 64 to 56 teams, with eight districts of seven teams apiece.

Marion is in the same district with Anamosa, Benton Community, Clear Creek Amana, DeWitt Central, Maquoketa and Solon. The Indians also learned their bye week opponent during the district portion of the schedule will be Washington, Iowa. The Indians will have two other non-district games to start the season.

Cedar Valley started its football program last season and played four games. The Huskies were not in a district. They are in a nine-team district that includes Central City, Elkader Central, Lansing Kee, Midland, Preston, Springville, Valley and West Central.

For the first time Class 4A will have district competition, with four six-team districts designated for the western half of the state. One of those districts, however, will compete with five teams in the upcoming season. It includes Ankeny Centennial, which is scheduled to open in 2013.

In an interesting twist, two defending champions have been dropped a class in the reorganization. Union won the 3A title but will now play in 2A. Iowa City Regina won the 2A crown but will now play in 1A.
