Prairie matmen flatten North Scott

Prairie started with a pair of pins and rolled past North Scott, 48-25, Wednesday in Class 3A regional dual meet wrestling tournament match at Prairie.

The Hawks (28-6) advance to next week's state dual meet tournament at Des Moines. Prairie is seeded sixth and will face third-seeded Iowa City West (33-3) in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. on Feb. 15 at Wells Fargo Arena. Semifinals are scheduled for 1 p.m. and the championship is at 7 p.m.

Prairie recorded five pins, a technical fall and a major decision. The Hawks built a 48-9 lead before North Scott won the last three bouts - one by major decision and two by falls.

Trent Schulte and Andrew Netolicky posted pins at 195 pounds and 220 to start the match and boost Prairie to a 12-0 lead.

North Scott's Chad Oerman bested Tony Kavanagh, 10-5, at 285, and the Lancers received six points for a forfeit at 106 to pull within 12-9.

That's when Prairie resumed its pinning parade.

Josh Wenger (113), Chris Walters (120) and Trey Blaha (126) decked their foes, boosting Prairie's lead to 30-9.

And the Hawks weren't done.

Zach Becicka (132) scored a decision, Skyler St. John (138) a major decision, Peyton Wagner (145) a technical fall and Zach Witte (152) received a forfeit.

The onslaught boosted Prairie's lead to 48-9.

Prairie called off the dogs for the final three matches, sitting Casey Becker (160), Cameron Rathje (170) and Austin Gould (182).
