A game for the ages and a peek ahead.

Our radio station - KGYM - has a pair of frequencies, 1600 AM and 106.3 FM. If we had a third channel, as ESPN television does for Classic games, Tuesday night's beauty between Linn-Mar and Kennedy would be played continuously for the next several days!

Undoubtedly the substate final boys basketball game played at Prairie will go down as one of the greatest games played in the annals of boys Metro basketball. One team, Linn-Mar, was looking to extend its record of appearances at the state tournament to nine. The other, Kennedy, was looking to put an end to the streak and go back to Des Moines for the first time since 2008.

The game had it all. Good shooting, tough defense, key runs and an improbable comeback.

It also had two amazing individual performances. Of course everyone will long remember Marcus Paige's final game in town. Forty-eight points, terrific defense and a stretch where he single-handedly put the Lions on his back.

His coach, Chris Robertson, put it best when talking with us after the game: "He became Superman at the end."

Not to be overshadowed though was the performance by Kennedy big-man Elliott Christians. The 6-foot-7 senior had a stuffed stat line of 28 points, 12 rebounds and at least five blocked shots in the game. He was the go-to-guy for the Cougars in the game and put the Cougars squarely on his shoulders for a good portion of the game.

While years from now people will undoubtedly look back on Paige's performance as one of the greatest of all time, pulling Linn-Mar back from a nine-point deficit with under a minute to play, Christians' effort for the Cougars should also be remembered.

It is the oldest adage in the book, and it applied on Tuesday: it's a shame someone had to lose that game.

And oh by the way, do you think Marcus Paige is this year's Mr. Basketball award winner?!

While the Cougars and Lions were slugging it out in double overtime, the Jefferson J-Hawks only needed one extra frame to pull off the shocker of the night by downing Cedar Falls at the McLeod Center. Taylor Olson came up big for Jefferson and he will get to go to Des Moines for the third time in his career, as will teammate Alec Saunders.

This will be the third straight appearance for Jefferson at the state tourney. The J-Hawks are now 3-0 at McLeod over the last three years. Perhaps they should schedule more games up at Cedar Falls in the coming years!

All this leads us to a look at the state tournament next week in Des Moines. Linn-Mar and Jefferson are two of the four teams that qualified out of the Mississippi Valley Conference in the 4A field.

It is a strong field of eight with five rated teams as well as some great individual talent assembled for the fans that go to Wells Fargo.

The two undefeated squads of Ankeny and Iowa City West appear to be the favorites, but don't overlook Linn-Mar. Jefferson will have a tough task to try and stop Ankeny and its high powered group of guards. But Olson, Saunders and company will be up to the task.

Linn-Mar has never lost a first round game in Des Moines and the Lions have a foe in their way that they defeated earlier this season in Dubuque Senior. It should be the most interesting game of the first day of Class 4A play in my opinion.

I like an MVC team to bring home the trophy...which one, is still the big question.
