Short-handed Huskies hand Monti shootout loss

MONTICELLO -- Cedar Valley Christian shrugged off the absence of seven seniors away on their class trip to beat Monticello, 3-2, in shootout Friday in boys soccer.

Cedar Valley converted all five of its penalty kicks in the shootout and Huskies keeper Will Muhlbach stopped one Monticello shot for the win.

The wind played a huge factor in the game.

Monticello had the wind in the first half and got off 13 shots, 10 on goal. The Panthers took six shots in the second half. Cedar Valley took only three shots against the wind in the first half and 13 with the wind in the second half.

Monticello led 1-0 at halftime.

Cedar Valley tied the game on a Jon Landis goal in the 62nd minute. It came off a corner kick by Arturo Melendez.

Peyton Paddock's penalty kick goal in the 75th minute pushed Monticello back ahead, 2-1.

But the Huskies countered in the 77th minute with a cross from Shelby Hembera that Alex Kennedy buried in the net for a game-tying goal.

Tom Scroggs, Melendez, Izzy Hoffman, Spencer Zielke and Kennedy scored for Cedar Valley in the shootout.  Monticello's fourth kick was blocked by Muhlbach, allowing Kennedy to secure the win.

Cedar Valley Christian is 8-5.
