J-Hawks pound Lions in twinbill

Cedar Rapids Jefferson scored early and often in a doubleheader drubbing of Linn-Mar on Thursday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference softball matchup at the Linn-Mar field.

Kenna Fry hit two home runs in the first game and Hannah McInerney matched that effort, one being a grand slam, in the nightcap as the fifth-ranked J-Hawks swept, 14-2 and 14-4.

“She can never let me be the star,” joked Fry, who had five hits and four RBIs as part of Jefferson's 33-hit barrage.

“I’m really OK with her being the star,” countered McInerney. “I’m pretty proud of everybody tonight.”

Rachel Sedlacek got things going with a game-opening solo home run. Her teammates got in the act as the J-Hawks sent 14 batters to the plate in a 10-run first inning, including Fry’s first shot of the evening and a two-run homer by freshman Maddie Hansen.

Senior Hannah Petersen struck out seven batters and scattered five hits in the five-inning opener. Senior Kailey Drake and junior Kaitlyn Davidson each had three hits.

In the second game, the J-Hawks (21-3, 15-1) scored five runs in the second and third innings to support Brooke Stauffer’s six-hit effort on the mound. McInerney’s big blow came in the third inning and her second one in a four-run fourth. Senior Carson Burgart had two hits, two RBIs and scored three times.

Linn-Mar (9-12, 7-9) was led by sophomore Maggie Rizor with three hits and three RBIs in an otherwise forgettable evening for the Lions.
