Overdue Goodell delivers for J-Hawks

After going hitless in his first five plate appearances Wednesday night, Jefferson senior Austin Goodell said he was due.

"Oh, my, yes," Goodell said.

Goodell delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning that lifted Jefferson past Solon, 10-9, in a non-conference baseball game at Jefferson.

The win was the fifth straight for Jefferson (10-13). The J-Hawks are in a four-way tie for second place in the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division heading into Friday night's home doubleheader against Xavier. The Saints also are in second place in the Valley.

Goodell said he noticed a pattern in the way he was being pitched.

"Almost every at-bat, the second pitch was a curveball," Goodell said. "So I had that in the back of my mind and sure enough that's what he threw. I just sat back and drove it."

Goodell rocketed a line drive that sailed over the head of Solon right fielder Nathan Hawkins, scoring Dylan Jellison from second base.

"I was pretty positive it was over his head," Goodell said. "I knew I put a good shot on it."

Goodell also made a clutch defensive play in the top of the 10th. With one out and a runner at third, he ranged into the right-center field gap to flag down Austin Dall's drive. The runner at third base failed to tag up and the J-Hawks got out of the inning when Solon's Tim Lance grounded out.

Jefferson appeared to have the game well in hand after Christian Knox and Jordan Dee belted back-to-back home runs with one out in the sixth inning that gave the J-Hawks a 9-4 lead.

But three straight singles leading off the Solon seventh knocked Jefferson eighth grader Spencer Van Scoyoc out of the game and the Spartans ended up sending 10 men to the plate and scoring five runs to tie the game.

"It was getting scary," said Knox, who had three of the J-Hawks' nine hits and drove in three runs.

Solon's rally ruined a fine outing by Van Scoyoc, a slender southpaw who allowed 10 hits, struck out six and -- most importantly -- did not walk a batter.

"I was focusing a lot more on throwing first pitch strikes," Van Scoyoc said. "I felt like I was in control."

Van Scoyoc took a 7-1 lead into the Solon sixth. He hit the leadoff batter, then made a wild pickoff attempt at first base that sent the runner to third base. He buckled down and struck out Colton Dall and speared a sharp grounder by Todd Oberthien, checked the runner at third and got the out at first.

But four straight hits followed that scored three runs before Van Scoyoc got Connor Fitzpatrick looking at a third strike.

"I kind of lost control of the game. I missed my spots and they took advantage," Van Scoyoc said.

Still, Jefferson Coach Mike Kuba sent him out for the seventh.

"Spencer came up after the sixth inning and said, 'I want the seventh,' " Kuba said. "It was an opportunity to stretch him out and see what he can do. He needs to be in that situation."

Sophomore Layne Sullivan relieved Van Scoyoc and threw 3 1/3 innings, scattering five hits and allowing two runs. Dylan Wright got the final two outs and picked up the win.

Solon (6-18) had 15 hits. Austin Dall, Chris McNutt and Kane had three hits apiece.
