Wash swimmers climb to 2nd in ratings

The Cedar Rapids Washington swimming team jumped from No.6 to No.2 in the state power ratings Sunday after their strong performance at the district meet on Saturday.

Coach Chris Cruise's confidence level also jumped several notches heading into the state meet this Saturday at the Marshalltown YMCA.

"Without a doubt," he said Sunday night. "We did some amazing things yesterday.

"We've got the opportunity to do some really nice things this week, but there's going to be some real good competition out there."

Cruise tabbed Muscatine, the No.1 team in the power ratings, as the favorite heading into the state meet, with Washington, Iowa City West, Johnston, West Des Moines Valley, Dowling Catholic and Dubuque Senior in hot pursuit.

"I think any of those teams could be in there fighting very hard for second through seventh place," he said.

And if all goes extremely well, the Warriors could challenge for the 28th state swimming title in school history.

The Warriors swam away with their 50th straight district title Saturday in Iowa City in convincing fashion, and their dominating performance was reflected in the new power ratings.

"We had a fantastic meet yesterday," said Cruise. "I am just absolutely amazed at how well we swam, top to bottom. A great performance, not only as individuals but as a team as well."

Washington has been seeded No.1 in the 400 freestyle relay for the state meet with Ryo Ueno, Jared Thorson, Nick Saulnier and Josh Hughes. Hughes is seeded No.2 in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, Thorson is seeded No.3 in the 100 butterfly and Saulnier is seeded No.5 in the 100 backstroke.

The Warriors also are seeded No.4 in the 200 medley relay and No.5 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Cruise is happy with sitting No.2 in the new power ratings, but he's not putting too much stock in those pre-meet numbers.

"I don't know if it's super significant," he said. "The power rankings are in some ways a representation of where you're at, but they're not entirely accurate in terms of what will happen at the state meet.

"Right now, on paper, we could do some really nice things. On the other hand, things could go the other way a little bit for us, too, I suppose, with us not being able to hold our position. But I don't think that's realistic."

Cruise expects Thorson, Ueno, Hughes and Saulnier to lead the Warriors at the state meet, followed by Nick Durin, Jakob Kehoe John Kopec.

"I think we're going to do pretty well next weekend," said Cruise. "We've still got a lot of gas left in the tank from those top four kids, and they're the ones that are going to help us score the majority of our points."

Chandler Heisler of Kennedy is seeded No.4 in the 50 freestyle. Justin Arebaugh of Linn-Mar is seeded No.6 in the 50 freestyle. Lance Scallon of Jefferson is seeded No.10 in the backstroke.
