Oglesby, Washpun power Warriors

PDF

That darn 35-point rule in high school basketball probably cost Josh Oglesby a record Monday night, but that was OK with Oglesby and the Washington Warriors.

Oglesby, Wes Washpun and all the seniors enjoyed their final home game anyway.

Oglesby flipped in eight 3-pointers and Washpun performed another Jordan-esque monster jam as the Warriors drubbed Clinton, 70-31, in the Class 4A substate quarterfinals.

Oglesby made seven 3-pointers in the first half, within striking distance of the school record of nine triples set by Mike Penney against Davenport West in 2002. But Washington led by 35 points at halftime, 53-18, which triggered a continuous clock for the entire second half and limited Oglesby's playing time.

He hit his eighth 3-pointer in the third period, matching his personal best, but time flew by since the clock did not stop for fouls, free throws or substitutions. He finished the third quarter with eight treys and stayed there, because he did not play in the fourth period with the Warriors enjoying a romp.

"I'm not really too worried about what the record is," said Oglesby, who finished 8-of-11 on 3-pointers. "Coach (Brad) Metzger mentioned something at halftime, that he wasn't going to take me out until I got nine, but at the same time I want other kids to get the ball."

Washington led by 37 points after three quarters. "I couldn't wait any longer," said Metzger, sensitive to the fact Clinton was in the final minutes of a winless 0-and-22 campaign.

Oglesby finished with 27 points and Washpun netted 21 with a series of mercurial, acrobat drives to the basket. One of those drives ended with a left-handed tomahawk slam that belongs in the highlight reel, along with all the others.

"It's about getting to be a standard, where at some point in the game he has to do that," said Metzger. "It's really something."

Washpun and his creative dunks are popular items on YouTube and his personal facebook page. "Yeah, it's fun," he said about those soaring slams.

Clinton was no match for Washington, which made it easier for Oglesby and Washpun to relax and put an exclamation mark on their home careers. It's been fun for Washington fans to watch.

"Exactly what they did tonight: Made a lot of 3-pointers, scored a lot of points and brought a lot of excitement," said Metzger. "That pretty much sums up their careers. They kind of showed why the next level is interested in them."

Oglesby has signed with Iowa and Washpun undoubtedly will find a place to play in college as well.

"We put a lot of years and hard work into this sport," said Washpun. "Just playing our last game here is kind of surreal. I can't believe this is actually our last one. It was a good journey, and I feel like we went out with a bang."

Washington (15-8) will play at Dubuque Senior Friday night in the Class 4A substate semifinals. The Warriors need two more victories for a return trip to the state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. If they beat the Rams Friday night, they'll play in the substate finals at the U.S. Cellular Center on March 1.

"I know last year when we got into Wells Fargo, people didn't even talk they were so nervous," said Oglesby, who'd like another chance. "Hopefully we can make a run down the road."
